Summary

Nikandros and Theodoros, young men of Spartan breeding, had long been united not merely by shared duty, but by a friendship so profound it withstood the severest trials of their age. From the stern rigours of their early training to the grave dangers of the battlefield, they bore the burdens of their station together, finding in one another a rare and steadfast constancy. Yet as war grows wearisome and the affairs of men grow ever more uncertain, even the most loyal of companions must confront the quiet tests of the heart. And what, in the end, might become of friendship—when honour, fate, and feeling collide?

Chapter I

Theodoros looked at the blue sky with his brown eyes. The sky looked different this time, like it was calling him. He stared at the sky longer, then his eyes went to the sand and his skin felt the warmth. He suddenly felt like it was very precious, he never noticed it before. For a moment he was grateful. He realised how nice the earth actually was, he never thought about this before. He just wanted to escape this, the agape, Sparta, everything. He was not sad though, he felt odd. He was only 7. He looked at the other boys around him, some looked happy, some looked sad. The words of the instructor faded slowly, as he observed the people. Then the little boy next to him spoke to Theodoros. "This is boring."

Theodoros didn't expect for someone to talk to him. He looked at the little boy, clearly amused. He didn't say a word for a second, then he just answered with a simple "I think so". The instructor went on talking.

And that is when the boy met the warrior.
