Chapter 1 : Echoes or name

Twelve years is a long time to chase a memory.

Even longer to keep believing it might chase you back.

Thyer stood still at the edge of the Westbridge Station platform, his breath rising in small clouds, the late autumn air cold against his skin. The city moved around him in fragments—rushed footsteps, the clatter of luggage wheels, the sharp whistle of the arriving train—but inside, time moved differently. Slower. Heavier. Like it had been dragging ever since she disappeared.

Chloe Hart.

Just the thought of her name felt like a stone dropped in a quiet lake—ripples of memory spreading out from the center of his chest. He had been only fifteen when she vanished from his world. One day, they were sharing secrets in the school courtyard, whispering promises about the future like the foolish dreamers they were. The next, she was gone. No note. No goodbye. Not even a rumor.

He searched for her in every city he visited, in every crowd, in every song that even slightly resembled the tune she used to hum. Sometimes he dreamed of her—her laughter, her eyes catching the sun—and woke up with an ache in his ribs like something had been taken from him all over again.

People told him to let her go.

But how do you let go of someone who shaped the way you loved?

Last week, everything changed.

He had seen her.

It was just after five in the evening, near the corner flower shop on Rosewood Lane. The first thing he noticed was the way she stood—weight on one leg, arms folded, eyes scanning the petal-wrapped buckets in the window. Her hair was tucked beneath a knit beanie, but the way it curled at the edges, the slope of her shoulders—it hit him like lightning.

“Chloe!” he had called out across the street.

She turned. For half a second, their eyes locked. And then—just like that—she turned away and disappeared into the crowd.

It had to be her.

He spent the next few days haunting that corner like a ghost, asking questions, holding a photo from an old school album as if it might anchor her back to reality. Eventu1Ially, the shop owner, an elderly man with a kind face, remembered her. “She buys white peonies,” he said. “Always the same. Quiet girl. Said she was getting them for someone named Julian.”

Julian.

The name had haunted Thyer ever since.

Was Julian a fiancé? A brother? A ghost from her side of the story? Whatever the truth was, it pulled at his chest with a cold grip. But despite everything—despite the years, the unknowns, the ache that never really healed—he wasn’t ready to give up.

That’s why he came back to the café today. Same place. Same time. Third table from the window, back against the wall. Watching. Waiting. Hoping.

The waitress poured him another coffee. He barely noticed.

Then—

“Thyer?”

He heard it before he believed it.

That voice. Softer, older, but no less familiar. It was as if time had folded in on itself.

He turned slowly.

She stood just a few feet away. Chloe.

Her green coat was buttoned all the way up, her hands tucked inside her sleeves. Her eyes—those same storm-colored eyes—held surprise, maybe even a little fear. But also something else. Recognition.

His heart slammed against his ribs.

“Chloe,” he whispered, the name tasting like both a question and a prayer.

She looked down for a second, as if gathering herself. Then she met his eyes again.

“You look exactly the same,” she said, offering the faintest smile.

“You don’t,” he replied. “You look… more real.”

They stood in silence. Words tried to form but tangled up in his throat. For twelve years, he had imagined this moment a hundred different ways. None of them prepared him for this—a quiet, public reunion soaked in old emotion and new confusion.

Finally, she broke the silence. “I saw you last week. When you called my name. I didn’t know if I should turn around.”

“Why not?”

“I didn’t think you were real either.”

Thyer stepped forward. “I’ve looked for you, Chloe. For years. What happened? Where did you go?”

Her smile faded. “That’s... a long story.”

“I’ve got time.”

She hesitated, then glanced at the empty chair across from him. “Is this seat taken?”

His heart leapt. “Not anymore.”

She sat down, slowly, cautiously, as if stepping into a dream she wasn’t sure she could trust. He watched her closely, afraid she might vanish again if he blinked.

And then she said it—the words he wasn’t ready for.

“I’m engaged, Thyer.”

He felt it like a knife between the ribs. Not deep enough to kill, but sharp enough to leave a scar.

He swallowed hard. “To Julian?”

She nodded.

The air changed. The quiet between them stretched wide like a chasm.

But then she looked up again, her voice softer than before. “But you were my best friend once. Before anything else. And I don’t want to lose that again.”

Thyer held her gaze for a long moment. Maybe destiny was cruel. Maybe it was patient. Either way, it had led them here.

“To friendship,” he said, forcing a small smile.

She reached for the coffee pot and poured herself a cup. “For now.”

And somewhere, beneath all the unanswered questions and unspoken truths, a new story began.
