Summary

When 14-year-old Ellis Graye is expelled from his local wizarding school for "unauthorized spellcraft," he receives a mysterious letter sealed with a rune no one recognizes. The letter leads him to Westerwyn, a hidden magical academy for "unruly" young witches and wizards – where magic is raw, ancient, and dangerous. At westerwyn, students are chosen not by houses, but by wand spirits ancient magical intelligences that awaken only for certain souls. Each student must forge a bond with a Wand spirit. Which grants them access to forgotten branches of magic – like bloodsong, elemental weaving, shadowbinding, or beasttalk. But something is wrong: the Wand Spirits are vanishing. Ellis, along with three misfit companions – sharp tongued Taya, soft-hearted genius Brin, and the cursed noble Lucan – must uncover who is stealing the Wand Spirits, and why. Their search leads them into the deep catacombs beneath the school, through cursed forests, and into the memories of Westerwyn itself. As the line between spell and spirit begins to blur, Ellis must choose, protect the school that gave him a second chance, or awaken a magic the world long thought buried.
