Chapter 1
Isa's Pov
Lovers be damned.
"You’ve got to be kidding me.”
Here I am rushing out to work after waking later than my usual waking time.
But standing in front of me is a guy who appeared to be in his 20s flirting with a girl in front of a car. This wouldn't have bothered me if the car wasn’t blocking me from driving out.
“This new generation of kids,” I muttered. Then quickly stop myself as my little niece's voice popped in my head. “Stop acting like you are old.”
I parked my car stealthily and walked towards them to tell them to move their car, but they were too engrossed in whatever discussions they were having.
I watched as the guy typed out something on his phone while the lady let out a loud laugh and hit him on the shoulder.
I took my eyes away from them to check out the car. It was a Rolls-Royce.
And the window was rolled down.
“Typical rich kids with no regard for others.”
An idea popped in my head. I walked over to the car and peeped inside. The ignition keys were at the mouth of the car.
I knew it.
A smile plastered on my lips.
I took a quick glance back at them, and they haven’t even noticed my appearance.
“Aww, it must be nice to be in love.”
I used to be before I met the devil’s incarnate.
In a swift motion, I removed the key, but my hand mistakenly hit the horn.
The sound of the horn caused them to turn.
Our eyes met.
Without waiting, I ran towards my car with them at my heels.
I got into my car, locked the door and watched them knocking on my window.
I stuck my tongue out and dangled the keys in their face before taking the other route, which was a long route to work, but at least one of us would have a bad day.
I stopped midday and paused. "What the hell am I even doing? I asked myself before I sped off.
My car screeched to a halt in front of a tall building with the inscription “C and B” firm.
I walked into the building where my assistant was waiting for me with a cup of coffee that she handed over to me.
“You came late,” she said.
“No, I am early,” I replied to her.
Technically, by the company standards, I was early. I do arrive at work two hours earlier than the other employees.
I led the way into the office as my assistant tried to fill me in about the day's schedule.
“Isa is late today,” I heard a voice say.
“I wish she wouldn’t come to work for a week or even the whole year.”
“She is so overbearing and over the top.”
“Always striving for positions and never stopping”,
“A woman should always be soft, like Raine here,” they said.
I watched as Raine curled her lips into a smile at the absurd compliments.
Seated around a table were five men, my competitors in this industry, and Raine, my junior.
“Her attitude is why she hasn’t gotten married all these years.”
“She is married to work. That’s why she hasn’t bagged a man.”
“Actually, she used to be in a relationship but…”
It was Noah talking; we started at the same level at the company, but now I am two steps above him. I took that as a clue to stop him before he says anything further.
I slammed the cup of coffee in my hand on the table in front of them. “Don’t you all have work to do this early morning?”
They were visibly shocked by my presence.
"I get that I am your muse for the day, but we have a deal to close this morning, so stand up and work. You can always get back to talking about me, but the deal won't wait.” I said and turned towards the direction of my office.
Their words don’t faze me anymore. Ever since I became the creative director in the company, I have gotten a lot of enemies.
Raine used to look up to me; now she has joined the group of gossipmongers.
Noah used to be my close buddy, but when I started climbing the ladder above him, he made it a point to hate me publicly and even recruit others to do the same.
I heaved a sigh as I settled into my chair when my phone buzzed. It was a text message from the executive director, reminding me of the meeting we have for the morning.
Pulling up the file I had worked on all night from my bag, I walked to the meeting room where I met the morning gossips.
“The presentation for the adverts for the Candancebee video game will start now,” I announced, moving to the front of the projector to start the presentation.
“That would be moved to another day. I need immediate advert ideas for Slam Motors.” A voice interrupted from behind.
“And who are you to interrupt my presentation?” I turned to look at the intruder.
A soft gasp left my mouth.
“The same way you ruin my morning?” He replied.
"You stalked me to my workplace?" I asked, moving towards him.
“I forgot to announce. That’s Theo Coker. The new chief marketing director?” Frank, the executive officer said.
“Chief marketing director?” I repeated.
"Interim chief marketing director. He actually is the owner of Tee and I firm, but the chairwoman said he would be collaborating with us for a while." Frank turned to announce to the rest of the people.
Standing in front of me was the guy whose key I had technically stolen this morning.
