Phobias, Fears,
10 years ago....
Ace,Sabo, and Luffy were sitting around a fire eating the meat from their latest catch. Luffy had been unusually silent through out dinner, and his brothers kept throwing him worried glances every few minutes.
" Hey, guys?” Luffy asked, his voice low and nervous.
Sabo looked up from his dinner as soon as his little brother started speaking.
" Yeah, what is it Lu?” he replied, as Ace set down his piece of meat and started to listen.
" Am I a monster?” Luffy asked in a small voice.
The two 10 year old boys looked at eachother alarmed.
" Who told you that Luffy?” Ace asked slowly, his voice promising death to the one who did.
Luffy looked at them, like a deer caught in headlights.
" J-Just some kids in town.” he gulped, pulling his hat down over his eyes to hide his tears.
" What?!” Ace roared, grabbing his pipe. Sabo caught his arm before he ran off and slaughtered the boys.
" Why did they call you that?” Sabo pressed in a soothing voice, though his eyes were sharp enough to cut steel.
" They-They said I was a freak because I could streatch and stuff, but even before I got my Devil Fruit they called me that.” Luffy choked out. Sabo walked over and sat down next to the distraught boy.
" Why?” Ace growled out, his fists clenched tightly onto his weapon of choice.
" Because I could do things they couldn’t like, move the giant boulder that sat in front of the big cave, or swim down and break off the giant coral.” Luffy mumbled, resting his head on Sabo’s shoulder before adding hesitantly;
" I just didn’t want to be alone.”
That made the olders boys blood run cold and their hearts break. Luffy was alone, why hadn’t they noticed?
" Well, with us around, you won’t ever be alone again!” Sabo said confidently. Luffy peeed up at him from under the brim of his hat.
" You promise?” he asked.
Sabo nodded.
" Promise!” he replied holding his pinky out. Luffy wrapped his own pinkie around Sabo’s. The two of them looked at Ace who groaned and walked over. He placed his pinkie on top of theirs and mumbled;
" Promise.”
Luffy cheered and tackled his two big brothers to the ground, causing a fight to break out between him and Ace. Sabo just laughed.
A few weeks later Sabo told Luffy he had Monophobia, or Islophobia, a fear of being alone.
10 years later.....
It was a sunny day for the Straw Hat crew. Luffy, Usopp, and chopper were running around on deck, Robin and Nami were relaxing, Sanji was cooking lunch, Zoro was napping, Franky was making some crazy invention, and Brook was sipping his tea quietly. Overall, it was anormal day on the Thousand Sunny. Until a scream rang out. Luffy stopped running causing his playmates to crash into him. Brook spit out his drink, Nami and Robin looked around, Franky came up to the deck, and Zoro slowly opened his eyes.
" What the hell was that?” Zoro muttered, stretching as he stood up from his spot next to the mast.
" I think it was Sanji-san.” Brook answered.
“I wonder what happened?” Usopp said.
" I hope he did not burn to death.” Robin said with a smile.
" DON’T SAY STUFF LIKE THAT! AND HOW WOULD HE BURN TO DEATH?!” Usopp screeched.
" He could have simply gotten caught in the stovetops flames.” she explained calmy, not effected by her crewmates outburst.
" Well, let’s go see!” Luffy yelled running into the galley. His crew followed at different speeds. When they got to the galley they were met with a astonishing sight. well, hilarious in Zoro’s opinon.
Sanji has pressed himself against the wall in a desperate attempt to get away from the beetle on the counter top.
" Sanji, whats wrong?” Nami asked.
" There’s a bug in my kitchen!” the cook shrieked pointing a shaking finger at said bug. Zoro burst out laughing.
" Y-You’re scared of a l-little b-b-bug?!” he cackled. sanji glared at him.
" SHUT IT MOSS-HEAD!” he roared.
" WHAT WAS THAT LOVE COOK?!” Zoro roared right back.
" SHUT UP!” Nami screamed.
" Of course my Nami~Swaaaannnn!” Sanji swooned. The beetle on the counter moved a bit, and Sanji turned back to being scared.
" Get it out of my kitchen!” he all but screamed. Luffy laughed and bounced forward to pick up the beetle.
Ohh, it’s a Bolbaffer Princeps!” he squealed, his eyes sparkling.
" A Bolbaffa-what?” Usopp asked.
" A Bolbaffer Princeps, they’re really rare!” Luffy explained, letting the bug crawl all over him.
" Well, I don’t care what it is, just throw it out!” Sanji ordered.
" But Sanjiiiiiiii!” Luffy whined.
" Or no dinner!” Sanji countered. Luffy’s reaction was instantaneous, he ran to his cabin and snapped a picture of the bug before running outside and throwing it into the sea.
" Bye Bye Buggy!” he yelled as it flew off.
He skipped back inside the galley and sat himself down on one of the chairs.
" Sanji! Food!” He cried.
" So, what’s Sanji have?” Nami asked Chopper.
" He has something called Entomophobia, a fear of bugs.” Chopper replied.
" What are you afraid of Nami?” Chopper asked.
" Well, I don’t like being in small enclosed spaces.” She said.
“Claustrophobia, the fear of small spaces.” Luffy said as Sanji placed his food in front of him. The crew all turned to look at their captain in surprise.
" Luffy, how do you know that?” Robin asked, a small smile on her face.
" Oh, causeI knew someone with Claustrophobia.” he replied before stuffing his face.
" O-Ok, Usopp what are you afraid of?” Chopper asked.
" the Great Usopp fears nothi-”
“Liar.” Zoro deadpanned, sitting down next to his captain.
" Oi!”
" You’re afraid of everything Usopp, if there was a phobia of that then-” Sanji was cut off by Luffy.
" It’s called Pantophobia, it means you’re afraid of everything.” Luffy said swallowing his food. Zoro smirked, his captain wasn’t so dumb after all.
" Ok, Luffy seriously, how do you know all of this?” Nami asked.
" My brother was the one with Claustrophobia, so after we learned he had it, he read us a book on Phobia’s and now we’re practically experts.” Luffy yawned, Zoro took that as his cue to take his captain outside for their daily nap. He picked up the 17 year old boy and carried him outside. Zoro sat himself down under the tree, before sitting Luffy in his lap. The rest of the crew walked after them, and sat down around them.
" Hey, Luffy can you name our fears?” Chopper asked.
Luffy nodded sluggishly, Zoro turned him in his lap so the boy was facing his crew.
" Name what you’re afraid of.” Luffy yawned, snuggling closer to his first mate.
" I’ll go first,” Chopper offered, ” Um, I’m afraid of one of you guys getting sick and I can’t do anything about it..” he confessed. Robin smiled sadly at him and pulled the youngest of the crew into her lap. He smiled at her shyly.
" Well, I think what you have is called Nosophobia, the fear of disease.” Luffy answered. Chopper nodded.
" Well, what about you Robin?” Luffy asked the woman. Robin looked hesitant but soon gave her answer.
" I’m afriad of betrayal and rejection.” she said.
" That’s easy, Pistanthrophobia, fear of being betrayed by a loved one.” Luffy concluded.
" But, you don’t have to worry about that here.” Luffy added with a grin. Robin smiled.
" How about you Franky?” Luffy asked.
" YOW! IT’S MY TURN!” The cyborg cried. He scratched his chin and thought.
" YOW! I think I’m afraid of the Sunny failing.” he cried.
Luffy smiled.
“Kakorrhaphiophobia, fear of failure.” Luffy said with difficulty.
" What about me, Luffy-san?” Brook asked, ” I’m afraid of rejection.”
" Well, in that case I’d say you and Robin are afraid of the same thing, so you both have Pistanthrophobia.” Luffy confirmed. Brook and Robin looked at eachother.
" Ok, so are we done here? I wanna sleep.” Zoro yawned.
" Not yet Zoro, we don’t know what you’re afraid of yet.” Nami said.
" Why me?” he groaned.
" Becaused Nami-san said so Mosshead.” Sanji growled.
" What was that Nosebleed?” Zoro growled.
" Stop it!” Nami yelled. The two of them went silent.
" Please, Zoro?” Chopper begged.
" Ugh! Fine” Zoro grumbled.
" So what are you afraid of?” Nami asked.
Zoro mumbled something none of them could hear.
" What was that?” Nami asked.
Zoro glared at her coldly.
" Stairs, I’m afraid of stairs.” he finally said. Sanji burst out laughing.
" You’re afraid of stairs?!” he laughed. Zoro glared at him, not the normal glare but the glare he reserved for those who hurt Luffy, his demon glare. Sanji stopped laughing at the sight of it.
" Why?” Usopp asked, ” I mean it’s just a couple of stairs, it’s not gonna kill you or anythin-ACK!” He was cut off mid rant by the tip of Zoro’s katana pointed at his neck.
" Shut up.” Zoro snarled, Luffy gently pushed away Zoro’s arm before he decapitated Usopp.
" Zoro.” he said in his captains voice. Said man looked at him. Zoro sighed before shifting Luffy in his lap so the boy could look at him as well.
" Why?” Luffy asked.
" Because, stairs killed my sister.” Zoro confessed in a low voice.
" I’m not gonna press it.” Luffy said, his tone told them not to question the man either.
" What you have is called Bathophobia, fear of stairs." Luffy said.
" Are we done now?" Zoro asked. Luffy nodded.
" Wait, Luffy what are you afraid of?" Chopper asked, this peaked the crews interest, never had Luffy told them what he was afraid of.
" I have Monophobia." Luffy said.
" And that is?" Nami pressed.
" The fear of being alone." Luffy replied softly.
The crew looked at eachother confused.
" Why?"
" Before I met Ace and Sabo, when I was 7, I had no friends." Luffy explained.
" Honestly, I didn't hold it against them for heting me or fearing me, and sometimes I thought they were right."
Luffy murmered.
" Right about what?" Sanji asked.
" That I should kill myself."
