Summary

Yai, Chained is a deeply personal and emotionally gripping crime documentary told in manga-style format. It follows the life of Yai, a girl born and raised in isolation by her controlling and psychologically unstable mother in a remote seaside village. From birth, Yai is metaphorically and physically "chained"—not just to her home, but to her mother’s twisted version of love and safety. The book is presented as a hybrid of illustrated scenes, diary entries, taped interviews, and police records, creating an immersive true-crime tone. As Yai grows, the reader witnesses the toll of captivity, gaslighting, and emotional abuse. What begins as overprotectiveness slowly unfolds into a darker web of manipulation, secrecy, and criminal cover-ups. When Yai finally escapes in her late teens, her story sparks a police investigation that uncovers years of hidden trauma and disturbing truths about her mother’s past. The story challenges readers to explore the blurry lines between love, control, and crime. At its core, Yai, Chained is a survivor's account—an introspective, haunting look at a stolen childhood and the fight for identity and freedom. It’s not just a story about what happened—it's Yai's voice finally being heard.

II. SUBJECT’S DIARY – EARLY CHILDHOOD

> Entry #1

Date: 1999-03-15

Time: 07:45

Location: Cliffside Path, Village Edge

Today Mama said we must stay by the cliffs forever. She held my hand so tight it hurt, but I smiled because I was afraid. The sea looked endless, as if it could carry me away. Mama whispered:

> “Listen to the waves, Yai. They’ll tell you not to leave.”

I wrote in the sand with my stick: “I wonder what’s beyond the horizon.”

But Mama erased it all with her foot.

> Entry #2

Date: 1999-03-16

Time: 18:20

Location: Home – Mother’s Room

I heard the village women talking again today. Through the cracked door:

> “That poor girl… always chained, day and night.”

I didn’t have the courage to answer. I just hugged Mama’s leg. The metal clasp around my wrist felt cold.
