Inconsistency rules
"For the most part this was a decent story, it had an interesting plot, established characters...although stereotypical for some of them, and it moved well. Where you lose me is inconsistency. First the male lead rejects the female lead for being human, then 5 years later the female lead gets to return the favor. So it's 1-1 on rejections. In most shifter canon that seals the deal for them being mates, not so in this case. Even though the bond has been severed the male lead has grown, come to his senses, and decides he wants her after all. Complete 180 on her feelings and her feelings for him. Before that point she was ignoring him, successfully might I add, and then on what seems to be a shift in the wind, she decides he can court her. Pun intended. Now the plot thickens, enter the inevitable ex girlfriend who makes a move on her old beau, She gets told, in no uncertain terms, that attempting to harm the mate or her family would end in death. What happens next? You got it, the old girlfriend poisons the younger brother, who has a peanut allergy. It's found out pretty quickly after they heal the boy, but here's where you lose me. Rather than following through on his threat, as he did to a previous crush who stupidly tried the same thing....She just gets kicked out of his Packhouse. Apparently her family is too well connected for him to enact vengeance. What? So the entire book so far has been telling us the Alpha is omnipotent within his kingdom, as it were. But now he can't do anything? So the ex is on the outside still plotting and then the threat, which he couldn't do anything about, escalates...because why wouldn't it, and the next attempt on the mate involves him. And that's where the subscription tier kicks in and ends my interest. This is the second book by this author that I've read with similar issues. Although, truthfully, I am reading a third in progress that I love. Hopefully it doesn't fall into the same pitfalls as the first two. "
