Chapter 1

Author's pov:

"A tall silhouette with a mysterious dark aura, eyes fixed on his phone, followed his assistant into the sleek glass-paneled building, his presence silent, yet impossible to ignore. His close friend, Stephan Castillo had arranged the meeting, but neither had bothered to mention their visit in advance. Simon, his assistant led the way through the quiet lobby, heading towards Stephan's office."

Vanessa's pov:

He moved like he owned the building. His presence quiet but commanding, like a man used to being obeyed, not questioned.

I spotted him from across the building, two sharply dressed men heading straight towards Stephan's office. I recognized Simon from earlier introductions, but it was the man beside him who pulled my gaze. Valentino Fernandez.

I had seen his photos—files, reports, blurry snapshots taken from a distance. But nothing had prepared me for the real thing.

Some men carry power in silence. He carried it in every breath.

Chiseled features, tall, with a commanding aura that pulled the air tighter around him. For a moment, my practiced calm almost cracked. But I remembered my role. Valerie Meyer. Not Vanessa Loxley.

I straightened as I saw these two men approaching Stephan’s office—one with a cheerful stride, the other tall, composed, eyes glued to his phone.

I stepped into their path deliberately, keeping my voice smooth. "Can I help you?"

Simon with a warm smile replied, “We’re here to see Mr. Castillo. Bit unannounced, but he’ll want to see us.”

I kept my expression polite, but firm. “Then maybe he should have told me.”

He laughed lightly. “I promise, he won’t mind—”

“That’s not your call to make,” I cut in, eyes locking onto his.

Before he could argue again, I felt it—that shift in the air. A quiet chill brushing against my skin. He hadn’t even looked up yet, but I knew.

Valentino's pov:

My finger's hovered over the screen, my attention on the screen—until Simon’s voice and the persistent assistant's refusal pierced my focus.

"Enough," with a low commanding voice, I said.

I finally lifted my gaze.

She stood there—unmoved, unintimidated. Most assistants backed down at my name alone, but not her.

I swept my eyes over her: dark, deliberate eyes, a face calm like still water but edged with something sharper.

She was beautiful—but not in a delicate way. Her beauty was the kind that held a blade behind its back. She was striking—yes—but there was more. An edge. A shadow beneath her stillness.

"Step aside. You’re wasting my time." I said with voice cold and commanding.

Unmoved and deliberately ignoring me, she responded to Simon with quiet defiance—like my words had never been spoken, or worse, weren’t worth hearing, "Rules are rules. No appointment, no entry."

My eyes deepened.

A dark heavy aura bled from me. The silence that followed felt suffocating, like the calm before a thunderstorm.

I didn’t lose control. I never did. But the weight of being ignored—gnawed me.

My eyes dropped to her badge: Valerie Meyer.

With voice low, sharp, controlled like a blade, I spoke, "Miss Meyer, I am not some mere assistant who has the luxury to argue at doorways. I don’t linger where I’m not needed—I lead. And unlike you, I have responsibilities that go beyond a desk and a hallway."

Valerie, tilting her head slightly, voice smooth but cutting, "Then maybe a man of your status should know that real power doesn’t walk in unannounced."

My jaw tensed. Something in her calmness burned more than open defiance.

That was the limit of my patience. I took a step forward—barely—but it was enough to shift the air.

And just then, the manager walked in.

Author's pov:

Startled by the icy air surrounding him, the manager faced the man with forced composure. "Mr. Fernandez! My apologies—I wasn’t told you’d arrived."

Valerie stepped aside—not in defeat, but with the grace of someone who chose to move. That alone made him look back.

Valentino finally looked at her fully now. His eyes—cool steel blue—scanned her face not like a man interested in a woman, but like one reading a blueprint. Calculating. Sharp.

She didn’t look at him. Not even a glance. But something in her stillness spoke louder than any words.

And for the first time in years, Valentino felt the burn of a question he couldn’t quite place.

Who was she?

He walked in without speaking, but something lingered in the air between them—an unspoken pull, a warning, a promise.

Whatever it was…it had just begun.
