Chapter 1: Back To Where It Began

The morning sun cast long shadows across the courtyard of Crescent High, where students hurried past with backpacks slung over their shoulders and laughter bubbling around them like noise that didn’t quite belong to Ava anymore.

She stood just outside the main gate, heart pounding in a way she hadn’t felt in years. The same red brick walls she’d left behind still held memories — some good, some painful, all tangled up with the girl she once was.

Ava adjusted the strap of her worn backpack and took a deep breath. Today wasn’t just the first day back at school after a long absence — it was the first day she was stepping into a world that had changed without her.

A voice cut through the hum of chatter, familiar and warm.

“Well, well. Look what the wind dragged in.”

Ava turned to see Ryan Carter leaning against the wall near the entrance, a lopsided grin lighting up his face. His messy brown hair was just as she remembered, his easy confidence a stark contrast to the nervous flutter in her chest.

“Ryan,” she said, voice barely above a whisper.

He stepped forward, eyes shining. “You’re really here. I wasn’t sure you’d come.”

She shrugged, trying to seem casual, but the weight of everything pressed down on her. “I wasn’t sure either.”

Ryan’s gaze softened. “I bet Emmy was counting down the minutes until she saw you again.”

Ava smiled, the tension in her shoulders easing just a bit. “She hasn’t stopped talking about me. Said I can’t run away again.”

“She’s lucky to have you,” Ryan said quietly.

The words hung between them. Ava wanted to believe them.

They started walking together toward the school entrance, the noise of the crowd growing louder with every step.

“How’s it feeling?” Ryan asked, glancing at her.

“Like I’m trying to find a place I don’t quite belong anymore.”

He nodded, understanding without needing more.

Just then, the sea of students parted near the parking lot, and Ava caught sight of him before he noticed her: Chris Bennett.

Chris stood by his sleek black car, surrounded by his usual entourage, exuding effortless charm and confidence. His dark eyes swept over the crowd until they landed on her.

Their eyes met for a fleeting moment — sharp and charged, like a silent conversation neither wanted to have but couldn’t avoid.

Ava swallowed hard. “He’s still here,” she muttered.

Ryan’s jaw tightened. “Captain Golden Boy never leaves.”

She squared her shoulders, trying to steady her nerves. “I’m not the scared girl I was before.”

Ryan gave her a reassuring look. “Good. Because he’s trouble, Ava.”

She forced a small smile. “I can handle trouble.”

But as she stepped past Chris and into the building, a knot tightened in her chest. No matter how much she tried to convince herself, some parts of the past never really let go.
