Chapter 1 Aurora

“I was in the middle of reading yet another one of my romantic books, completely lost in the story and imagining myself in its world, when a knock on the door snapped me out of it.‘It’s open!’ I called out to whoever it was.The door creaked open, and in came my little sister, clutching her teddy bear. She climbed onto my bed and looked at me with those sweet, honey-colored puppy eyes.‘Ary, do you want to go to the pool? Mommy said I can only go if you or Christian come with me, but he’s not here… Can we go together?’How could I say no to a face like that? ‘Mmm, okay. Go put on your swimsuit, I’ll put on mine too, and wait for me in the living room, alright?’ Her face lit up with joy, and she ran off without saying a word. I got up, closed the door, and walked to my huge wardrobe to find my swimsuit. I grabbed the red one — the one that fits perfectly at the top and doesn’t cover much at the bottom.I slipped on my slides and headed downstairs. As I came down the stairs, I could already see my little sister bouncing with excitement, waiting for me.‘Come on, Ary! Let’s go!’ she said, tugging on my hand as I smiled and followed her out to the backyard — where our pool was. As I lay back sunbathing, reading my book while my little sister splashed around in the pool, I suddenly heard two male voices entering the backyard“Great. Just what I needed,” I muttered to myself, already knowing who one of them would be.Sure enough, my older brother approached.“Ary, did Mom tell you about the event we have to go to tonight?”I looked at him, trying to remember what he was talking about.“From that look on your face, I’m guessing she didn’t,” he said, laughing.“Nope. Didn’t say a word. So I guess that means not all of us need to go,” I replied, turning back to tan my back.“We all have to be there, Ary. You think Nick and I would cancel our plans otherwise?” he said, clearly annoyed. Still not turning to face him, I asked,“What time are we supposed to be there?”“Eight. We’ll all be there.”I heard footsteps approaching, followed by a deep male voice I could recognize out of a thousand.“Christian, you owe me for bailing. Yours drove me crazy ,with the other one I just said I couldn’t make it and gave zero explanation.”“Sorry, man. I owe you one,” Christian replied.I listened silently to their conversation. Of course, girls again. These two never change — the only thing they switch up faster than their outfits is their girlfriends.“Hey Aurora, where’d the rest of your swimsuit go?”I took a deep breath and answered without even looking at him:“Wherever your dignity went, I guess.”Then I turned my head. God. This man just keeps getting more attractive. He looks like his dad — black not too long wavy hair, tall (way taller than me), sharp features, ridiculously fit… and those eyes. He has his mother’s eyes. That stunning deep blue eye color I could stare at all day — if he didn’t constantly drive me insane. And if he wasn’t such a… womanizer.“Hmm, someone’s in a good mood today,” he said.“Yeah, I was — until you showed up.”“Always with the sweet words,” he smirked, winking at me.I rolled my eyes in the most exaggerated way possible.“Christian, I’m heading out. My nephew’s coming over, I have to babysit.”“Alright, man. I might come by later. See you.”“Later.”Christian threw me one of his stupid smirks before his friend walked away.“What?” he looked at me with a strange expression.“Just… be careful, Ary.”I didn’t even get a chance to respond before he turned and walked off — and then our mom appeared.“Ary, I left some dresses on your bed for you to choose from for tonight.”“Mom, when exactly were you planning on telling me about this? Right before we’re supposed to leave?”“No, sweetheart. I told your brother last night to let you know. Didn’t he say anything?”That idiot. He definitely waited on purpose.“Yeah, he told me… about half an hour ago.”“I’ll never understand that boy,” she muttered, shaking her head. Then she turned to my little sister.“Anna, get out of the pool, sweetie. You need to start getting ready. Come on, let’s go take a bath.”Anna climbed out of the pool and ran over to Mom so they could head upstairs.About five minutes later, I went upstairs too, finally ready to get dressed.I picked out a black dress — the top was a fitted corset covered in subtle black glitter, hugging my chest perfectly, while the rest of the dress flowed loosely with a high slit running all the way up my thigh.I slipped on my black YSL heels, did my makeup, and let my wavy hair fall naturally down my back.“Aurora, sweetheart, come downstairs — we have to leave!” I heard my dad calling from the hallway below.
