Chapter 1 - The Departure

The sun slowly rose through the treetops, casting golden beams over the village of Eloria. The scent of wildflowers blended with the aroma of herbs drying on the balconies of the houses. In the central square, the ancient fountain poured crystal-clear water, as it had for centuries, while the villagers began yet another ordinary day. But for Noelle, this would not be just another day.

She stood still before the old stone arch marking the entrance to the northern road. Her dark blue dress, embroidered with arcane symbols, absorbed the morning light, while the wind gently stirred the strands of her long hair. She held her staff firmly, eyes fixed on the trail that disappeared into the horizon. She expressed neither hesitation nor expectation — only the awareness that it was time to depart.

At her side, Thorne adjusted the straps of his backpack. He was a man of medium height, broad shoulders, and an attentive gaze. His sword, sheathed on his back, glinted discreetly under the sun. He had already crossed treacherous forests, faced bandits and monsters, yet still carried a silent respect for the journey that was about to begin.

Are you ready?” he asked, breaking the silence.

Noelle slightly inclined her head, signaling affirmatively. No more words were needed.

Thorne smiled faintly and began to walk, his steps echoing along the stone road. Noelle followed him, casting a brief glance back at Eloria — not out of longing, but to record the image of a place that would no longer be part of her routine. The sound of the morning bells, the aroma of freshly baked bread, the familiar faces: all would remain, but at a distance, as fragments of a life now left behind.

The road stretched ahead, winding through the hills until it vanished into the blue horizon. The comfortable silence between them was broken only by the rhythmic sound of their footsteps and the occasional song of migrating birds. Noelle extended her fingers, almost automatically, sensing the subtle presence of magical energy flowing through the environment. Feeling the magic in the air was a reflex, an extension of herself — not a search, but a natural state.

As they walked, Thorne spoke, moderately, about past battles and distant cities that Noelle knew only through the texts she had studied under the guidance of her mentor, the Archmage Arlaen. In return, she related objective facts: the rigor of her training, the precision of the techniques learned, and the inevitable conclusion she had reached — it was not enough to merely know magic; it was necessary to test it, to apply it in the real world.

When the sun was already high, they reached a small grove. Centuries-old trees formed a green canopy overhead, and the sunlight filtered through in silvery beams. At the center, a clear lake reflected the treetops like a mirror.

Shall we rest here?” suggested Thorne.

Noelle nodded with a simple gesture. With a controlled movement of her hand, she conjured a sphere of light that floated around them, repelling insects and gently warming the environment. While Thorne prepared lunch, Noelle approached the lake’s edge, observing her reflection. Her expression was neutral; her gaze, steady and unchanged. She sought neither comfort nor confirmation — only stated: she was prepared.

Somewhere, beyond the distant mountains, the Demon King awaited, threatening the free kingdoms. His defeat would signify the end of an era of darkness... and the opening of a new cycle. That was the objective. Nothing more.

She turned to Thorne.

We can proceed." she stated, with the same calm.

He nodded and stood up.

Thus, with the afternoon light tinting the sky in gold and purple, the two companions resumed their march, following the trail that would lead them to unexpected encounters, countless dangers, and the fulfillment of a destiny greater than either of them could imagine.
