Summary

Agnes Carmichael knew pain. It wasn’t the kind of pain where friends tell you it can always be worse. No, Agnes lived the torture which people used as examples about worse is. Losing her husband, daughter and eventually her mother in an accident, she’s left with loathsome in-laws who hold her responsible for her current hell. Agnes needs a break from the constant, overwhelming pain of her memories, the torture of her loneliness and the hate of her in-laws. Enter her best friend suddenly needing her for a change. When Heather’s father Fergus falls and breaks his leg, Agnes offers to take care of him, so Heather doesn’t miss out on the career opportunity of a lifetime. Despite Heather’s warnings the Scottish Highlands in May won’t be a beach vacation, Agnes feels the call of the misty mountains almost as much as the longing to be needed, even if it’s by a cranky old farmer. Agnes doesn’t count on Fergus’ neighbor being crankier than him. Farlan MacDougall doesn’t care if the world hates him. He hates it right back.
