Chapter1-"The One Who Thinks She Knows Everything
✨
Professor Amin adjusted his glasses, gaze sharp.
“So, who would like to argue the ethical consequences of selective justice in governance?”
As expected, no one raised a hand.
Until two hands went up at the same time.
Miraal. Zayan.
A few students stifled laughs. The professor just sighed. Again?
“Of course,” he muttered. “Zayan Khan and Miraal Qureshi. The usual battlefield.”
Zayan leaned back in his chair, pen twirling lazily between his fingers. His sleeves were rolled up, and he looked like he had just enough care to show up — but not enough to actually be worried.
Miraal sat perfectly straight. White scarf draped neatly, notes highlighted with color-coded tabs. Her expression was unreadable.
“Ladies first,” Zayan smirked. “Always a gentleman.”
“If you were a gentleman,” Miraal said calmly, “you’d actually listen instead of constantly interrupting intelligent people.”
Ouch.
The class snickered. Zayan grinned wider.
“I do listen. I just don’t always agree with your moral lectures. You act like a scholar, but you're just a student with highlighters.”
Professor Amin held up a hand before Miraal could respond.
“Let’s keep it academic. Miraal, begin.”
She stood up. Her voice was clear, controlled, and steady.
“Selective justice, in a governance context, goes against the very foundation of fairness. No matter the status of the person, the principle remains: justice must be served equally. It’s not subjective. It’s not flexible. It’s essential.”
Zayan rolled his eyes.
“Yeah, yeah. In theory. But in the real world, nothing works like that. You're quoting ideals, not how people actually operate.”
“Because people fail,” Miraal shot back, “doesn’t mean the principle is flawed. It means they are.”
Zayan got up now, voice louder.
“Maybe people like you should stop preaching and start understanding how things really work. You live in your bubble — your rules, your scarf, your perfect little world. But outside? No one plays fair.”
“And people like you use that excuse to justify being cowards,” Miraal said. “It’s easier to mock values than to live by them.”
The class went silent.
Zayan’s smirk dropped. For the first time, Miraal saw a flicker of something in his eyes — not anger. Not hurt. Just… surprised. Like she hit a nerve he didn’t know he had.
Professor Amin clapped once.
“We’ll continue this next week. For now, thank you for the… passionate insights.”
Miraal sat down, not looking at Zayan. Zayan sat down, not looking at Miraal.
But their thoughts were loud enough to echo:
“I can’t stand her.” “I swear, he makes me sick.”
Outside the class, someone whispered,
“They’re going to kill each other before graduation."
AUTHOR'S POV:-
Zayan and Miraal are academic rivals they had been competing with each other from the start of their higher secondary school.
Most of the time Miraal would be the one to score the highest and there has been a very rare chance to see zayan ranking first.
This is the third year of them competing with each other and it's the mid-semester so both of them are very well focused on their studies to rank first.
Let's see who will be the top rankings this semester...
