Promising Debut with Strong Writing and Room to Grow
"This story is beautifully written, with a strong narrative voice that immediately draws you in. If this is the author’s first published work, they are off to an incredibly impressive start. The prose is smooth, the pacing (especially early on) is compelling, and the emotional depth of the main character is well explored. The first two chapters are especially strong — they set a mysterious, gripping tone that keeps you on edge, eager to know more. These chapters showcase the author’s potential to craft suspense and intrigue. However, after that powerful opening, the plot begins to shift more into familiar YA territory, focusing heavily on the main character's personal struggles with family and generational trauma. While these themes are important and relatable, they somewhat dilute the initial mystery and tension that made the beginning so captivating. One structural suggestion would be to consider labeling the first chapter as a prologue. This would help signal to readers that the mysterious tone and events of the opening are part of a larger arc that will unfold later. Additionally, moving the scene with Maya to a later point in the story might give readers more time to settle into the world and connect with the protagonist before diving into heavier emotional territory. Overall, this is a very promising story. With a bit more focus on plot development and structural refinement, it has the potential to truly stand out. I’m excited to see what this author creates next!"
