Chapter 1
I wanted to use this first section to thank my creative writing professor and poet, Mary Bodwell! These poems were made from creative methods that she taught my class, and each method helped me explore my poetry writing skills. I wanted my entire book to be based on the story of Genesis in the bible, each poem is from a different piece of that section of the bible. Each poem was created using a different method that we used in class, which ended up helping my motivation and writing process. My first poem, “Serpent,” is a persona poem based on the paintingThe Fall of Manby Michelangelo. This poem is written from the perspective of the snake/human creature that is wrapped around the tree. My second poem, “Creation Of Eve,” is another persona poem that is in Adam’s point of view. This poem was written by taking the line “Stolen from my bone” from a poem calledAdam Thinkingby Lucielle Clifton. My last poem, “The Tree,” is a poem that is written in reply to and inspired by the haikuTree Of The Knowledge Of Good And Evilby Udiah. My favorite part of my writing process was choosing an image to add for my second and third poem, I didn’t know that there was a painting by Michelangelo calledCreation Of Eve.While writing each of these poems, I caught myself deeply looking into all of the paintings done by Michelangelo on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.
