Prologue

Alani (age 10)

My twin sister’s eyes were usually full of life, bright and cheerful.

But now her beautiful eyes were wide and vacant.

Glassy.

Lifeless.

I squeezed my eyes shut and opened them again. The constant pain in my head and the loud ringing in my ears refused to go away as I stared at her.

After a sudden brutal force hit our car, the vehicle had rolled over countless times before slowly coming to a stop upside down.

Elanor and I still hung from our seats, our seatbelts preventing us from falling onto the roof.

Minutes passed, and it took me several attempts to try and open my eyes.

I groaned as I gripped my aching head which had smashed against the window. My eyes widened as I felt a hot wet substance coat my fingertips.

I drew my hand back.

Blood.

I slowly turned to face my sister, who swayed silently in her seat.

Panic gripped me as I realized she had no movement. Her arms swayed listlessly, a thin stream of blood trickled from her temple, her neck twisted at an unnatural angle…

My stomach lurched.

Necks weren’t supposed to bend like that.

They were supposed to be straight.

“Trembling, I reached out, my fingertips brushing her cold cheek.

"Elanor?" I croaked.

Silence.

A tear escaped, and I nudged her cheek harder. "Elanor, please wake up."

But she remained unresponsive, frozen in place, her eyes like glass, her arms swaying. A dark pool of blood spread beneath her, and a scream tore from my throat.

I screamed for help.

I screamed for Elanor.

I screamed for the driver to awaken.

I screamed to be heard.

But my cries were swallowed by the wreckage.

No one heard me, no one found me, no one woke up.
