"Do I really have to come?" I whine for the a hundredth time. Livia groans and Dom, her boyfriend, laughs.
Livia and I have been bestfriends since forever. Our moms were best friends so they made sure that their daughters were best friends too. We took our first step together. We went to school together. We grew up together, we were basically sisters.
"C'mon Ana! It's only for a week and I really want my fiance's siblings to like my only sister."
Dom and Liv met when we were in highschool. Dom was the dark haired broody jock that everyone stayed clear of and Liv was the nerdy girl with braces and glasses that everyone didn't give a shit about. Until that summer. The summer she spent with her cousins in who knows where and she came back a completely different person. Looks wise not personality wise. Her platinum blonde hair was straightened and shiny, her big round eyes were no longer covered by those big nasty glasses but by contact lenses and her pale skin was glowing. After her transformation, Dom noticed her and they started hanging out and of course the rest is history. True that their story was kind of cliche but hey at least they were happy, right?
We reach our destination. The Hannes' vacation home where Liv was forcing me to stay and bond with her fiance's family for a week. We take our bags inside and I drop face first on my bed. The sheets are so soft and I literally feel myself sink into the bed. It doesn't take long before I'm asleep.
When I wake up, more people have arrived judging by the booming music downstairs. I drag myself out of bed and immediately head to the kitchen for a glass of water.
"Uhm, who are you?" I jump at the feminine and yet oddly deep voice behind me. I turn and my eyes widen at the beauty standing before me. Her silver eyes trail down my body while she twists her luscious midnight hair around her finger.
"Are you done eye raping my sister now?"
I scoff tearing my eyes away from the ethereal being. Dom laughs and pulls me against his side. "Ana, this is my sister Katarina. Katarina, this is Livia's sister Ana." Katarina frowns as she holds out her hand for me to shake. "No offense but you and Livia look nothing alike." I laugh. "Liv and I are bestfriends but we grew up together so when anybody asks we just say we're sisters." She nods in understanding.
"Come meet the rest of my family." Dom drags me to the spacious living room where two other men are seated on one of the couches. "Matej, Kaspar." The two men stand up and walk towards us. My gaze flits over to one of them immediately drawn in by his eyes. A sharp twinkling crystal blue. The man smiles when he notices my gaze on him revealing pearly whites beneath a pair of plump lips. "That's Matej, my elder brother." Dom gestures to the handsome man. "And that is Kaspar, my baby brother." I look away from Matej and smile at Kaspar. Kaspar flashes me a charming smile before taking my hand and placing a soft kiss on my knuckles.
"Lovely to meet your acquaintance m'lady."
I chuckle. "Aren't you a charmer?" Kaspar smiles before letting my hand go.
"You're a middle child Dom. I should have known."
Dom smacks the back of my head with an eye roll. "Shut up Ana."
He storms upstairs muttering something about going to wake Liv up. Katarina takes a seat on the sofa adjacent to the one the boys are sitting on and I do the same.
"So Ana, what do you do for a living?"
"I am a full time model and entrepreneur." It was hard work trying to balance between the two but I made it work.
"Who did you say your parents were?"
I smile at Katarina. "I didn't but if you must know I'm a Wyss."
The look of shock on their faces is not uncommon because it's the same look I always get when I tell people who my parents are.
"But you're black?" Kaspar sputters. Matej smacks the back of his head. "Don't be rude idiot." Kaspar groans and rubs the spot like it actually hurt. "I didn't mean to be rude, I was just in shock. And don't dare pretend like y'all weren't thinking it."
Matej smacks his brother again before turning to me. "How come I've never seen you at any company event or any formal event for that matter."
I shrug. "I'm usually busy most of the time." Not a complete lie but also not the truth.
Matej hums thoughtfully. Luckily, Dom enters with a sleepy Livia in his arms saving me from another round of interrogation.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Liv, Katarina and I are in the master bedroom painting our nails when I decide to bring up a certain blue eyed boy.
"So Katarina, your brother is cute."
She visibly gags. "Please do not ever say that again. Kaspar is far from cute."
I chuckle. "Who said I was talking about Kaspar?"
Katarina pales. "You're talking about Matej. Of course you're talking about Matej."
"Yeah. I think he's really cute."
Liv and Katrina exchange a look. "What? Why are you looking at each other like that?"
Liv shrugs. "Nothing really. We just don't think you and Matej are compatible."
"Compatible? Liv, I said he's cute not that I'm going to marry him."
"Yeah but I know how you get Ana. You develop a crush on a guy and then suddenly you think he's the one."
I roll my eyes. "It was one time Liv. Let it go."
She raises her hands in surrender. "I'm just saying Ana, you will fall for anyone who shows you the slightest attention. I'm looking out for you here."
Her words scratch at a scabbed wound on my heart. "Well it's good to know my bestie has my back." The harshness of my tone makes Liv's eyes widen and I can tell when she finally comprehends the words she just said. "Ana, you know that's not what I meant. You are nothing like her."
The wound starts to bleed. "I think I'm going to head to bed. It's been a long day." I bolt out of the room before Liv can say anything else. I make a detour to the kitchen before going to my room. The football match the boys are watching plays loudly and their shouts of excitement are even louder.
"You will for anyone who shows you the slightest attention."
I clench my fists to stop my fingers from trembling. I know Liv was only trying to look out for me but her words still hurt. They hurt really bad.
"Damn! I'd hate to be the person you're murdering in your head right now." A deep voice cuts through my thoughts. Heat fills my cheeks when I realize who it is. "Did your mama never teach you not to sneak up on people?" Matej laughs and makes a beeline for the fridge. "I will have you know my mama taught me plenty of things. She's the reason I'm such a good boy." He smiles flirtingly.
"We just don't think you and Matej are compatible."
"Hey, you still there." He waves a hand in front of my face. I smile at him but I know it looks very fake and more like a grimace. "Is everything good?" Concern drips from his tone. I nod. "Yeah. Everything is fine. I'm just really tired. Goodnight Matej." Matej narrows his eyes suspiciously. "Goodnight Ana." He pecks my cheek and leaves.
Damn, it was going to be hard to stay away from him.
