Chapter 1

Une femme se promène à Gotham au début de l'hiver. Elle voit un homme affalé sur un banc de parc. Ses cheveux sont teints en vert et il a une peau très pâle. Il semble dormir. Il porte un costume mauve sombre avec une écharpe verte qui lui couvre la moitié du visage.

Alors qu'elle s'apprêtait à le dépasser, la femme remarque que les yeux vert poison de l'homme sont fixés sur elle. Sous son masque chirurgical, l'asiatique sent ses lèvres frémir.

- Dites-moi monsieur, suis-je belle?

Cette question n'est pas aussi anodine qu'il n'y parait. Elle la pose à chaque homme, à chaque garçon, qui la fixe un peu trop longtemps.

L'homme aux cheveux teints la regarde quelques secondes sans répondre.

- Oui, bien sûr!

La femme sort une paire de ciseaux de sa poche de la main droite et retire son masque de la main gauche. Elle dévoile les cicatrices gravées dans ses joues par son époux lors d'une crise de jalousie. Un sourire éternel.

- Et maintenant? Suis-je toujours aussi belle?

Mentalement, la femme se prépare à le voir ou l'entendre exprimer son dégoût ou encore à dire oui dans l'espoir qu'elle ne se serve pas de ses ciseaux. Elle ne laisse jamais personne lui échapper...

- Toujours aussi belle? Non. Tu es désormais sublime! Hahahahahaha!

Tout en riant comme un fou, l'homme descend son écharpe. Il dévoile ainsi sa bouche. Une bouche avec le même sourire tout sauf naturel.

- On m'appelle le Joker. Et toi?

L'homme tend la main devant lui. L'asiatique la prend timidement.

- Je... je suis... Kuchisake... Je suis Kuchisake!

- Ravi de faire ta connaissance!

Le Joker se penche vers elle et l'embrasse sur la joue gauche, en plein sur la cicatrice, là où aurait dû se trouver la commissure de ses lèvres.

- Ça te dit qu'on aille montrer nos sourires assortis en ville? Je connais un adulte en collants et avec une tête de chauve-souris qui dit toujours que personne au monde ne voudrait avoir la même tête que moi. On pourrait aller lui causer une crise cardiaque!
