Prologue
Ava’s POV
The day I turned twenty-four was the day I died.
“They’re coming to kill you, Princess Ava.” My lady-in-waiting yelled from the door. The words had barely left her mouth before I watched her eyes go wide, and she dropped to the floor.
Masked men marched into the house and came right at me.
I never thought this was the way my life would end, or maybe I was too blind to see it coming.
Six years ago, I got married to the love of my life. It was all I ever wanted, and it was the best thing to have happened to me. I didn’t realize it was also the origin of my downfall.
As a werewolf princess, I was supposed to be ambitious and fearless. Instead, my life revolved around a man named Zenith, my husband and my mate. My life, my power, my soul, and my time were all his.
While he became obsessed with power, I stood by his side, too scared to tell him when to stop because I didn’t want him to leave. For the past five years, I tried my best to give him a home, a child. My love for him so blinded me that I didn’t see the monster he had become.
“Hello Princess,
Three years ago, I found out my mate and husband had been cheatingwith his childhood best friend. His mother knew of his extra marital affairs and had told me to ‘suck it up and stay quiet’
/A girl like you isn’t meant for the throne./ Zenithhad told me one day, and his words never failed to echo in my head. He said I was too weak.
And still, I stayed, I endured Zenith’s abuse and manipulation. I’d lived in the cocoon of his lies for so long that it became my reality.
Zenith’s mistress ended up having a son for him, and my husband got worse. He became more of a beast.
He’d looked me dead in the eye and said, “You’re a pathetic barren, how can you be a Luna when you can’t even be a mother?”
His words killed me even before I died.
Today is the day when Zenith’s dream comes true. He would be announced as the new werewolf King, and on the same day, our home was invaded by these masked men. Zenith wasn’t there to help me. My wolf was too weak to fight. It had been weakened by the numerous drugs I’d taken just to have Zenith’s heir.
And the guards he left behind? Omegas. They were powerless against a pack of assassins. One after the other, I watched them being slaughtered like animals.
It was a lost fight.
Zenith had deliberately left only the Omegas because he had once told me I wasn’t worth wasting manpower on.
“What do you think you’re doing?” I screamed as these monsters continued to wreak havoc in my home.
One of them came closer to me and pointed a knife right at my neck.
“My husband is the new King. He wouldn’t tolerate any of this. Leave while you still have the chance to.”
They laughed, and the one standing in front of me asked, “And who did you think sent us?” The voice belonged to a female.
“What?” My eyes widened, and I shivered from the sudden cold that ran down my body.
“Your husband sent us, Your Highness,” The lady pulled out a phone and played a voice note.
It was that of Zenith. He said, “Get rid of Ava. I don’t need her anymore.”
Hot tears rolled down my cheeks as I fought to breathe. It was impossible. Zenith wouldn’t do that.
“W..Wh..Why...” I couldn’t make out the words.
“Because only one person gets to be Queen.” My murderer whispered to me before she plunged her knife into my chest.
She removed her mask almost immediately, and I found out it was Zenith’s mistress. I held onto her shoulder as my knees began to give out.
She laughed.
My blood seeped through my fingers as I lay broken on the cold marble floor. They say your life flashes before your eyes when you die, mine was filled with nothing but regrets.
If only I had not trusted him.
If only I had fought for myself.
If only I weren’t the foolish, weak princess, maybe, maybe my story would end differently.
But it was too late.
Still, as I became consumed by darkness, I breathed out desperately, clinging to the little hope that I had left.
If there truly is a deity out there, help me.
Give me a second chance… and I will destroy him first.
