Chapter One – The Interview

It wasn’t just an interview. It felt like a judgment day. Emma Carter stood outside the towering glass building of Ashford Enterprises, her palms sweaty around the thin handle of her leather folder. She had worn her best navy pencil skirt, a cream blouse that hugged her modest curves just enough, and heels she already regretted. She inhaled deeply, held it for three seconds, and walked in.

The lobby was quiet and glimmering. Marble floors echoed her cautious steps as she approached the front desk.

“I’m here to see Mr. Ashford,” she said, keeping her voice level.

The receptionist looked up, almost surprised. “Name?”

“Emma Carter.”

A few seconds of silent typing. Then a nod. “You’re expected. Twenty fourth floor. You can take the elevator on your left.”

Emma stepped inside the elevator, pressing 24, and watched the numbers climb. Her heartbeat echoed in her ears. This job wasn’t just another opportunity it was survival. Rent was due. Bills were piling. And her ex had left her with nothing but emotional baggage and an expired gym membership.

The doors opened to a minimalist hallway steel, grey, glass. And silence.

“Miss Carter?” came a deep voice.

She turned, startled. A man stood near the glass wall, looking at her with piercing hazel eyes. Tall, sculpted jawline, dark hair slightly tousled, sleeves rolled up just enough to show power without trying too hard. He didn’t look like a CEO. He looked like a sin in an expensive suit.

“Mr. Ashford?” she said, her throat suddenly dry.

“Damian,” he corrected, walking toward her. “I don’t care for titles. Sit.”

She obeyed. His office had no distractions just a single black desk, two chairs, and a floor to ceiling view of the city. No family photos. No awards. Just him.

“I’ve read your resume,” he said, eyes never leaving hers. “Impressive, for someone your age. But this position isn’t just about skills. It’s about trust.”

Emma blinked. “Trust?”

“I don’t like mess. I don’t like lateness. I don’t tolerate disobedience. You’ll work late nights. Travel with me if needed. And when I say jump, I expect you to already be in the air.”

She stared, unsure if this was intimidation or foreplay. “I understand.”

“No, you don’t. But you will.” He leaned forward, elbows on his desk. “Tell me, Miss Carter what makes you think you’re capable of surviving me?”

His words were deliberate. Dark. Almost...playful?

Emma didn’t flinch. “Because I don’t scare easily. And I need this more than I fear you.”

His brow lifted. “Is that so?”

A long pause. Then a slow smirk.

“You start Monday.”

“Just like that?”

He stood. “Do you want a gold star or a contract?”

Emma stood too, ignoring the spark in her spine. “I’ll take the contract.”

As she turned to leave, his voice stopped her.

“One more thing, Miss Carter…”

She looked over her shoulder.

“My rules are not suggestions.”

Emma forced a polite nod, her spine stiff but steady. “Understood,” she replied, the words tasting like steel on her tongue.

Damian Ashford didn’t say another word. He simply turned his back to her and stared out the window, as if dismissing her presence without a gesture. The city below looked small from here miniature cars, ant like people, a world he clearly ruled from this glass throne. And now she was part of it. Or at least, trying to be.

As the elevator doors closed behind her, Emma released the breath she’d been holding for what felt like an eternity. Her legs finally trembled, but she didn’t allow herself to collapse. Not here. Not yet.

By Monday morning, she had second guessed everything her blouse, her heels, even her name. But she still walked into Ashford Enterprises at 7:59 AM sharp. The receptionist barely looked up before nodding and gesturing toward the elevator.

Twenty fourth floor. Again.

This time, the air felt heavier.

His office door was slightly ajar. She knocked once.

“Come in,” came that same deep voice smooth and unyielding.

She stepped in.

Damian was at his desk, sleeves rolled, tie absent, a cup of black coffee steaming beside him. He didn’t look up.

“You’re early,” he said.

“You said no lateness.”

That earned her a glance brief, but enough to quicken her pulse.

“Sit,” he ordered.

She did.

He slid a leather bound folder across the desk toward her. “Your contract. Review it. Sign if you agree.”

Emma flipped it open. The terms were strict long hours, full availability, minimal personal interference. There was even a clause about confidentiality that read like something out of a spy thriller. But the salary was twice what she’d expected, and the benefits included everything short of a personal bodyguard.

“You’ll have your own office down the hall,” Damian said. “But I expect you in mine when summoned. No delays.”

Emma didn’t respond immediately. She kept reading flipping pages like she wasn’t intimidated by his gaze burning into her.

“You don’t intimidate easily,” he observed aloud.

“I already told you that.”

“Most people lie when they say it. You’re either naive or stubborn.”

“Or both,” she said, still reading.

Damian smirked. “Good.”

Silence settled again, thick and strange.

Finally, she signed.

He took the folder back, scanned the signature, and nodded once. “Welcome to hell.”

Emma raised an eyebrow. “That bad?”

“That honest.”

She stood. “Then I’ll see you in hell, Mr. Ashford.”

His eyes narrowed slightly amused, but assessing. “Damian.”

She gave him a half smile. “Damian.”

Her office was sleek, silent, and intimidating in its own way. Black leather chair. Empty bookshelves. A monitor already blinking to life with company credentials. Her inbox held five emails all marked “urgent.”

And so it began.

For hours, Emma buried herself in contracts, schedules, vendor reports, and legal notices that required a law degree to fully comprehend. But she was fast. Sharp. Efficient.

At 12:03 PM, her desk phone rang.

She picked up. “Emma Carter speaking.”

“Conference room B. Five minutes.”

The line went dead.

He was already there when she arrived, sleeves rolled again, tie still missing. His presence somehow overtook the entire room as if even the air molecules answered to him.

She took the seat beside him not across, not diagonally. Beside. Close enough to feel his heat. Maybe that was deliberate.

Four other executives filed in shortly after, all older men in tailored suits. They greeted Damian with clipped nods, one even looking a little pale.

“Let’s begin,” Damian said, not bothering with small talk. “Miss Carter will be taking minutes and offering observations. She sees what we don’t. That’s why she’s here.”

Emma blinked. That’s why she’s here? She was supposed to be his assistant not some boardroom analyst.

But she nodded. “Of course.”

The meeting flew strategy, numbers, deals, deadlines. Damian was ruthless. When one of the directors stumbled over a projection, he shut him down with a single word: “Unacceptable.”

When another proposed a delay in overseas shipment, Damian’s jaw tightened. “I don’t delay. Fix it or find someone who can.”

Emma scribbled furiously. Not just notes patterns. Power plays. Fear responses. Everyone bowed to Damian, but not out of respect out of fear. And yet, he didn’t raise his voice. He didn’t need to.

By the end, her hand ached. The executives left with tight mouths and looser collars.

Damian didn’t move.

“You handled that well,” he finally said.

“I didn’t say anything.”

“But you absorbed everything. Efficient. Focused.” He turned to her slowly. “And you didn’t flinch when I got...sharp.”

“Would flinching help?”

He studied her like she was some puzzle he wasn’t used to solving.

“No,” he admitted. “But most people try anyway.”

Emma closed her notepad. “I’m not most people.”

A pause. Then “No. You’re not.”

By 7 PM, the office was nearly empty. Lights dimmed. Silence returned.

Emma stretched her shoulders, about to shut down her system, when her phone buzzed.

One more task. My office. Now. D

She stared at the message. No “please.” No details. Just a command.

She stood, slipped off her heels for silence, and walked barefoot down the hallway.

Damian was at the window again, city lights dancing over his silhouette.

“You sent for me?” she asked.

He turned slowly. “I wanted to see if you’d still obey at this hour.”

Her eyes narrowed. “Is this a test?”

“Everything is.”

She crossed her arms. “Then I hope I passed.”

“You didn’t leave.”

“I’m not a quitter.”

He stepped closer not enough to touch, but enough to invade.

“You’re not scared of me. Yet.”

Emma held his gaze. “I don’t need to be scared to be smart.”

Another pause. Another silence between two minds pushing at each other like storm fronts.

Then, with a crooked smile: “You’ll do.”

She smiled back just enough to show teeth. “I already knew that.”

A storm was coming.

And neither of them would walk away unchanged.
