War of the worlds: Camouflaged War
The war between the dark wizards and the knights of light had been raging for two years. The country of Granz had been surrounded by the dark wizards, and King Edron had been taken captive within the country. The knights of light sent a small force to aid them, led by Vongor Morlak. Vongor was the most dangerous opponent for the dark wizards, as the power lying dormant within him made him the mightiest being in the universe. Although his training was not yet fully complete. According to tradition, the elder sibling, or in the case of the firstborn, a parent must take responsibility for the training. Vongor’s sister, Bellatrix Ezra, began his training. It was a huge responsibility for Bellatrix, as she was tasked with training the one who could, by tapping into his full strength, become the strongest being in their world.
For the knights, it began to seem like entering Granz had become an impossible mission. The wizards were fighting with overwhelming numbers, and their swords spilled more and more blood on the battlefield. The situation in Granz was becoming more and more hopeless, and the people were starting to lose faith in the knights. Their food supply was running low, and the king was being tortured in captivity. As Vongor looked over the bloody battlefield, his gaze grew clouded. If Bellatrix could not send reinforcements, the mission to liberate the country would soon come to an end. Both the wizards and the knights had released their dragons, but the wizards’ dragons proved to be stronger in battle. Eventually, they saw a massive, fire-red 35-meter dragon in the distance. The size of an average dragon ranged between 10-15 meters, so this was considered a particularly large specimen. The fire it exhaled destroyed most of the knights. Never before had they seen such a massive dragon. It burned not only the knights but also the other dragons to ashes. When Vongor saw it approaching, he thought it was the end. He tried to conjure a shield with magic for his army, but the dragon was able to destroy it in seconds. Vongor could only wonder who the leader of this attack might be. He ordered the remaining dragons to unleash maximum firepower against the wizards’ giant dragon. Bellatrix and her team then arrived at the front with reinforcements.
“Vongor has begun engaging the wizards’ forces!” a soldier remarked to Bellatrix.
“Not that I’m surprised, since I specifically asked him to wait until our team arrives!” Bellatrix replied, drawing her gleaming sword. She walked up to her brother to urge him to retreat.
“Vongor! It’s time to sound the retreat!”
“Pardon? You can’t be serious!” Vongor said in disbelief to his sister. “We can’t abandon the people of Granz!”
“We’re not abandoning them! I’ve acquired something that will allow us to easily free them, but we need to retreat for now!”
“I hope you know what you’re doing!” Vongor said after a brief hesitation, finally giving the command for his soldiers to retreat.
As they returned to the headquarters, Vongor eagerly awaited his sister’s new battle plan. Bellatrix led him to the farthest corner of the headquarters, then pointed to the wall where, seemingly, there was nothing.
“So, what do you think?” Bellatrix asked.
“What do you mean? I don’t see anything!”
“Exactly!” Bellatrix smiled. Suddenly, a medium-sized dragon appeared beside them. Vongor’s mouth dropped in surprise. It was a cloaking dragon. Not only could it conceal itself, but it could also hide the riders and cargo it carried. It was the rarest of species, but it would be incredibly useful to either side if one could manage to tame it.
“A cloaking dragon? And what about the dark wizards’ power? Won’t their magic detect it?” Vongor asked, still stunned by the sight of the dragon.
“Supposedly not! In practice, we don’t know yet! We’ve never tried this method before, since it’s quite hard to tame them.”
“But this one dragon won’t be able to take on the entire army.”
“That’s not the goal! The country’s food supply is running low, and with this dragon, we might be able to deliver enough food to the people. This is the perfect task for you to test the dragon!”
“Are you serious?” Vongor yelled. “And are we just going to let the wizards continue wreaking havoc?” His face turned red with anger, as he wanted to deal with the wizards who had taken over the country.
“We can’t save the people if the entire population starves in the middle of the battle! The most important thing right now is to save them, and the first step is to get food to them. Some of our soldiers will go with you on the dragon in case something goes wrong. But try to do it in a way that nothing goes wrong.”
A few hours later, they were ready to depart when Jundar Varnath stepped in front of Vongor. Jundar served as an advisor to the knights and his counsel was always given great attention.
“Could you wait another minute before we leave, Vongor?”
“Of course! Has something happened?”
“I think I’ve figured out who’s leading the siege on Granz! It’s that massive army and the huge dragon. I’ve seen something like it before. Is the name Trent familiar to you?”
Vongor thought for a moment. It indeed sounded familiar. Commander Trent was from the godha race, and like the other members of his species, his appearance most closely resembled that of a chameleon. In fact, he didn’t possess any form of magic. Neither dark magic nor the magic used by the knights. However, he was such a strategic genius that the leaders of the dark wizards made him the commander on the battlefield.
“I thought he was killed in battle with his dragon!”
“I thought so too. But when you returned, one of their soldiers told me that every dragon had a specific mark.”
“Each one had a chameleon burned into it!”
“I would like to join you as well! I’m sure I’ll be able to spot the cloaking dragon. And I’ve already been an advisor in battles against it!”
“Feel free to join us on the dragon, Jundar.” Vongor smiled at him.
As soon as they mounted, the dragon spread its massive wings and took off into the air.
“Begin the cloaking!” Vongor commanded the dragon, which then became invisible to the world, along with its passengers. They were already approaching Granz when they spotted the dark wizards’ army. They all remained calm, as it seemed that they hadn’t noticed them. However, Jundar cautioned Vongor.
“Trent could be anywhere! Let’s hope he’s not at the target location, because knowing him, he could easily see through us.”
They flew higher with the dragon to better survey the area and spot any suspicious signs. As they flew toward their destination, they saw dragons coming toward them at increasing speed. They felt uncertain. They couldn’t decide if the dragons had noticed them or if they were heading elsewhere. The dragons were coming at them faster and faster. As they got closer, panic took hold of Jundar.
“Our dragon is strong enough to handle them. The ones flying toward us are relatively smaller.”
“We must not reveal our cloaking!” Vongor replied.
“They’ve already spotted us!” Jundar shouted.
“We stay cloaked and wait to see what happens!”
“This is pure suicide!”
The dragons were only a few meters away when they suddenly changed direction. At that moment, everyone breathed a sigh of relief as the cloaking operation turned out to be successful. Vongor just smiled and turned to Jundar.
“I told you there was nothing to worry about. But now, I’m curious where they might be going.”
“I think I know where they’re headed.” Jundar spoke in a frightened tone. “They’re holding King Edron at that location. The dragons are going to eat him!”
Both the knights and the wizards had a form of telepathic ability that allowed them to communicate with each other. Vongor also activated this ability to speak with his sister.
“Bellatrix! They’ve sent dragons toward the king! They’re probably going to finish him off!”
“This is absolutely bad news! Continue to the destination and fill the food stores. I’ll send teams to rescue the king.”
“You won’t make it here in time! We have to act!”
“Vongor! For once, just listen to me!” Bellatrix said angrily, but it was in vain. Vongor always went his own way. As he looked out into the distance, he saw the giant dragon again, with Trent riding it. They immediately recognized the chameleon-like creature.
“Head straight for the dragon!” Vongor commanded his dragon.
“What are you doing, Vongor?” Bellatrix asked angrily.
“The cloaking dragons hold the greatest power, and since we only have this one, only I can stop Trent’s rampage.”
“The people need food!” Bellatrix shouted, with increasing anger.
“Don’t worry, my sister! Everyone will get enough food!” Vongor smiled, then broke the telepathic connection. “The dragon can only use its power if it turns off the cloaking, so everyone, be prepared!”
“Don’t we need to deliver food?” one of the soldiers sitting at the back of the dragon whispered to the other.
“You can tell you’re a rookie! When Vongor Morlak leads us, we never get away without a fight.”
“Turn off the cloaking!” Vongor shouted as they got close enough, and he gave the dragon the order to fire.
“This is a cloaking dragon!” Trent shouted in alarm, ordering his dragon to activate shield defense. The dragon conjured an invisible shield around itself. The shield easily blocked the fire that Vongor’s dragon exhaled. “Your dragon’s firepower is useless against my dragon’s shield!” Trent laughed. “Launch fireballs!” he commanded his dragon, which spread its wings and began firing fireballs from the scales.
“Activate the cloaking!” Vongor ordered his dragon. The dragon reactivated the cloaking, but Trent’s dragon continued to fire fireballs from the scales on its wings. Vongor’s dragon skillfully dodged the fireballs, eventually evading them completely. Vongor received a telepathic signal from his sister.
“Don’t worry, Bellatrix! We made it!”
“If you had listened, you’d know that Trent has fought cloaking dragons before, and you’re the first ones who survived it! It’s probably because no one has ever managed to surprise him this much. That dragon species is particularly dangerous! If you hadn’t cloaked yourselves so quickly, it could have fired lightning bolts that track the enemy. Those lightning bolts can go through any shield.”
“Send reinforcements, and in the meantime, we’ll take care of Trent!”
“You do realize this is not your task, right?”
“Of course!” Vongor replied with a smile and cut off the connection. “Turn off the cloaking!” he commanded the dragon.
“Release the lightning!” Trent shouted, and the dragon began firing massive bolts of lightning from its eyes.
“Dodge around Trent’s dragon at maximum speed, then head straight for it, and when we’re close enough, cloak again!” Vongor shouted to his dragon. Meanwhile, Trent’s dragon raised a shield, preparing for a counterattack. Eventually, Vongor’s dragon started toward Trent’s dragon, and when they got close enough, they cloaked again and flew away from the scene. The lightning bolts, however, destroyed the shield, along with Trent and his dragon.
“Now, there’s only one thing left to do!” Vongor grinned. “Let’s fill up the food supply.”
“That was a really reckless move!” Jundar spoke up, still looking frightened.
“Well, yes! My solutions are rather unique!” Vongor grinned back at him, as they descended toward their destination.
