Chapter 1: The New Beginning

He’d always imagined college would feel different — like stepping into another world. And in a way, it did.

The campus buzzed with life. Laughter echoing down red-brick paths, groups huddled on grassy lawns, guitar strings floating in the distance. It was a bright morning in late August, the sun casting golden light across the dorm buildings. Freshmen wheeled suitcases and dreams across pavement, some with parents trailing behind, others like him — alone, but not lonely.

Elian Karter, eighteen, first-year engineering student, paused just before the entrance to Maple Hall. Backpack slung over one shoulder, schedule in hand, he took a deep breath. Not out of nervousness — he didn’t get nervous easily. He just liked to observe. Watch before diving in. That’s how he’d always been. Quiet, but not shy. Calm, until someone lit a spark.

Room 206. Top floor. He pushed the door open.

Inside, his new roommate was already halfway through setting up — posters pinned, bedsheets a mess of sports logos, energy drink cans by the desk.

"Yo," the guy greeted with a grin, extending a hand. "I’m Zeke. Zeke Morrison. Business major. You?"

"Elian Karter. Engineering. First day out here."

Zeke laughed. "Same. Welcome to the jungle, my man."

Later that day, Elian wandered into the campus café — more out of curiosity than hunger. It was called “Common Grounds.” A cozy space with low-hanging lights, indie music in the background, and the warm scent of coffee beans dancing in the air.

And that’s where he saw her.

She was laughing at something on her phone, earbuds in, hair falling over one eye. Something about her made time slow down for a second. Not just beauty — it was something else. She had this energy that made the room feel lighter.

She looked up. And their eyes met.

She blinked.

He nodded — subtle, like he wasn’t sure she was real.

She gave a small smile, like she knew the moment was something.

Then, just as quickly, she turned back to her phone. But Elian stood frozen for a few seconds longer.

Back at the dorm that night, Zeke smirked.

"You good, bro? You’ve been staring at your laptop screen like it owes you money."

Elian hesitated. Then: "I saw this girl today. In the café. Don’t even know her name."

Zeke grinned. "Say less. We’ll find her."

Elian raised an eyebrow. "You make it sound like a mission."

"It is a mission. Operation Café Crush. I got you."

They both laughed.

Elian didn’t realize it then, but that moment — that single glance in the café — would mark the beginning of something beautiful... and something brutal.

Because she wasn’t just a stranger.

She was Arielle Vaughn. And her story was tangled with one he didn’t see coming. A secret past, a present connection to someone closer than Elian could imagine, and a choice that would test everything he believed about love, trust, and himself.
