Ashes Of Summer

The forest was no longer just a backdrop. It was a character in its own right — watching, listening, remembering. As summer faded and the first chills of autumn crept through the trees, the air turned crisp, almost brittle, as if nature itself sensed what was coming.

They had left the cabin behind. Too many shadows. Too many whispers. Too much blood on the floor — metaphorical, for now.

A week had passed since the note: Trust no one. Not even yourself.

And not one of them had slept through a single night.

They camped near the old quarry — a jagged scar in the earth, once used for mining, now overgrown and forgotten. It was Nico’s idea. “They won’t expect us to leave the woods,” she’d said. “And this place has its own silence — not the kind that follows you.”

Max didn’t trust the silence. It was too clean, too empty. Like a pause before a scream.

Lila hadn’t spoken much since the night of the broken window. Her hands trembled sometimes, especially when she thought no one was looking. But Rowan was always watching.

And Rowan… they were unraveling in silence, too. Holding the group together with quiet glances and barely held breath.

That evening, as the orange glow of dusk settled over the treetops, the four friends sat around a small fire, the flickering flames casting shadows on their tired faces.

Rowan broke the silence first. “I’ve been thinking. About the message. About all of this.”

Max’s voice was flat. “You and everyone else.”

“No,” Rowan said, eyes glinting. “I’ve been thinking about what it means — not even yourself. What if the traitor doesn’t know they’re the traitor?”

Nico froze. “You think it’s a split memory? Like they’ve been… conditioned?”

Lila looked up, her voice quiet but sharp. “You’re saying one of us could be doing this in secret—even from ourselves?”

Rowan nodded. “What if they hid something inside us—triggered it? A keyword. A time. A date. A memory.”

Max let out a humorless laugh. “Then we’re not hunting a traitor. We’re hunting a ghost inside one of our heads.”

The fire crackled as silence fell again, but this time it was heavier. Suffocating.

Then Nico said, “There’s a place. Back when they experimented on us. A room underground. We weren’t supposed to remember it. But I do.”

Rowan’s eyes sharpened. “What kind of room?”

“A locked one,” she said. “And I think the answers are still there. I think they knew this would happen. And I think they left something behind.”

Max stood. “Then we go. First light.”

Lila finally spoke again. “And if we find something we don’t want to know?”

Rowan looked at her evenly. “Then we decide—do we survive by knowing, or die by staying blind?”

As the fire died down and the stars bled into the night sky, none of them spoke.

Because somewhere in the dark… something had already awakened.

And it remembered everything.
