Shadows In The snow

The world had changed.

Beneath a heavy, leaden sky, the forest was buried beneath a thick blanket of snow. The branches sagged under the weight of frost, and the frozen earth cracked with every cautious step. Silence pressed against them, not just the quiet of winter, but the heavier stillness of something waiting — watching.

Rowan pulled their scarf tighter around their face, trying to keep the cold out but failing to block the chill that had settled deeper. The air tasted sharp, biting at their lungs with every breath.

“We can’t keep running,” Rowan said, their voice low but steady, carrying a quiet resolve. Their eyes, pale and steady like winter’s own light, scanned the barren white landscape. “Not anymore.”

Max stomped the snow with impatient frustration, his breath a misty cloud in the frozen air. “Running never was an option. But now? We’re being hunted. Not just by whatever that thing in the Hold was, but by ourselves.”

Lila’s hands were shoved deep in her coat pockets, fingers twitching with restless energy. “We left pieces of ourselves behind in that chamber. Pieces that don’t want to be found — or forgotten.”

Nico trailed slightly behind, her movements hesitant, fragmented. She wasn’t fully herself anymore — never quite had been since they’d pulled her from the pod — but she was breathing, whole enough to stand, enough to fight.

Rowan glanced back, their voice softening. “We have to keep her safe. All of us. But we need answers. The map leads to Winter’s Reckoning — the last known location tied to the project. Whatever it is, it’s the final key.”

The faded, frostbitten map they carried was nearly illegible beneath the snow’s damp chill, but the coordinates stood out — a point deep in the northern mountains, marked with a symbol that resembled a cracked hourglass.

The journey was relentless.

Each step forward was a battle against the cold, the fatigue, and the gnawing uncertainty that crept beneath their skin.

They’d faced twisted mirrors and fractured shadows before, but the chilling wind whispered a new kind of fear — one that seeped into their bones and their bonds.

Trust, once their strongest tether, felt fragile now, like ice cracking beneathfoot.

As they climbed higher, the trees thinned, revealing a stark landscape etched with ice-blue crevices and jagged cliffs.

The sun, a pale ghost behind thick clouds, cast long shadows that seemed to stretch toward them, as if the mountain itself was alive and reaching.

Max stopped suddenly, staring ahead. “There — look.”

Carved into the side of a rocky cliff was a weathered archway — half buried in snow, half swallowed by creeping vines of frost.

An ancient doorway, carved with the same hourglass symbol from their map.

Rowan’s fingers brushed the cold stone, their voice barely a whisper. “Winter’s Reckoning.”

Behind them, Nico shivered. “We’re close. Too close.”

The forest behind them seemed to sigh, the wind picking up and carrying with it a whisper.

A warning.

A promise.

Some truths refuse to stay buried beneath the snow.

Some reflections refuse to fade away.

Rowan looked back at their friends — faces pale but determined, hearts steeling against the coming storm.

This wasn’t just a journey anymore.

It was a reckoning.
