CHAPTER 1 : THE STRING THEY LEFT BEHIND
It had been raining since morning.
Not a gentle drizzle — but a cold, relentless downpour that painted the whole town of Elmsbury in shades of grey. The sky pressed low, clouds thick and unmoving, as though nature itself was holding its breath.
Beyond the rusted gates of Elmsbury University, near the crumbling old auditorium, three bodies lay in silence. Side by side. Neatly placed. Like someone had taken their time.
Two girls. One boy.
All twenty-three.
All dressed in black.
Detective Maggie Hayes stood just beyond the yellow tape, the rain clattering on her umbrella. Her boots sank slightly in the muddy ground. She stared at the scene without blinking.
She’d seen death. Murder. Accidents. But this… this was too quiet.
No blood. No signs of struggle.
Only red strings — tied gently around the little fingers of each victim.
Adam John, tall and sharply dressed despite the weather, stepped up beside her, holding a soaked clipboard.
Adam: “Victims confirmed: Daisy Elwin, Jessica Lane, and Keith Alvaro. Graduated from this university five years ago. No family currently living in Elmsbury.”
Maggie: “And they all showed up… together?”
Adam: “Arrived the same night. No public event on campus. Could be a private meeting.”
Julia Melvin, the team's forensic analyst, crouched by Jessica’s hand, gloved fingers carefully lifting a red string.
Julia: “Same knot. Same pressure. No signs of a struggle. This wasn’t an attack — this was planned.”
She turned and held up a plastic bag containing a folded piece of wet paper.
A daisy, drawn in blue ink.
Beneath it, smudged words:
> “We never broke the thread.”
Maggie’s chest tightened.
Maggie (quietly): “This isn’t just murder. This is memory.”
🕵️♀️ Welcome to the HALO Division
H.A.L.O. – High Anomaly & Lateral Operations
A specialized unit created for one purpose: to uncover the truth when conventional methods failed.
Three hours later, the case was officially handed to the HALO Division.
They weren’t flashy. Their office was tucked in a repurposed archive building on the edge of town — four desks, one broken heater, and a leaky ceiling in the northeast corner. But they were the best Elmsbury had for “complicated cases.”
Inside, a corkboard already displayed photos of the victims.
Daisy Elwin – Quiet, artistic, always drawing something.
Jessica Lane – Smart, bold, known for her fierce loyalty.
Keith Alvaro – Friendly, energetic, kept everyone laughing — and distracted.
Maggie stood in front of the board, arms crossed.
Julia clicked on her tablet, projecting an old group photo onto the wall — seven students, all laughing in the rain. The three victims were among them. So were five others.
Julia: “I checked the university yearbooks. This group was inseparable in their final year. No official name, but professors called them the ‘Motto Circle.’”
Adam: “Why?”
Julia: “Because they always signed their messages with a line: ‘Tied by thread. Broken by silence.’"
Maggie: “Where are the rest of them?”
Julia turned and handed her a file.
Isaac Dare – Vanished after graduation. Current location unknown.
Zara Neal – Lives in a high-rise in the city. Never returned to Elmsbury.
Alex Benny – Changed his name. Rumored to be working in social services.
Charlie Brent – Digital ghost. Erased nearly everything about himself.
Paul Xavier – Off the grid. No social media. No contact. Chose silence.
Adam: “That makes eight students total.”
Julia: “No. There was one more.”
She slid another photo across the table — old, grainy, from a school event.
A young boy stood at the edge of the group. Eyes serious. Unsure.
No name written. No mention in the school record.
But Maggie knew him.
His name was Leo.
🌙 A Memory in the Rain
Later that night, Maggie sat alone in her car. The rain had softened to a mist. Streetlights painted golden circles on the wet pavement.
She opened her glove box and pulled out a wooden box. Inside it — an old envelope with a pressed daisy inside. And a photograph.
Leo.
He’d been her first case in Elmsbury.
A student who went missing just before graduation.
Never found. No suspects. No goodbye.
And now, three of his classmates were dead.
A red thread binding them — even in death.
Maggie (to herself): “This isn’t just a case. This is what we missed.”
