Summary

(Sequel to Silent Victims, but can be read independently) Aino and Olavi lost their family in the war between the Soviet Union and Finland. They were only children when a group of enemy soldiers invaded their home and took their brother from them. With their mother's death the same winter night, they were left to survive on their own. Twelve years later, 19-year-old Aino and her younger brother finally return home. But their homecoming is shadowed by the ghosts of the past, a past which left Aino wary of strange men and protective of her baby brother, who she swore to protect from Elias's fate. The unexpected arrival of a former enemy soldier to their village sets off her alarms. Especially when the stranger's eyes linger a little too long on Olavi, who seems too curious in return.
