Saphira was raised to be obedient. As the daughter of a powerful gargoyle family, her future has never belonged to her. Now she is expected to marry a cruel nobleman and secure an alliance with a corrupt council - one that could place the entire continent under the control of a growing darkness. So Saphira runs. Disguised as a commoner and armed with more sarcasm than survival experience, she is determined to disappear before the binding ceremony. But escaping her family’s hunters becomes much harder when Kain, an exhausted former soldier turned tracker, is hired to bring her home. Kain expects an easy bounty. Instead, he finds a fierce, infuriating woman who fights like a warrior, complains about camping, and refuses to behave like the helpless noblewoman he was promised. The longer they travel together, the more he questions the men who hired him - and the less willing he becomes to surrender her. Forced into hiding together, their sharp banter ignites into something far more dangerous. Protecting Saphira means betraying Kain’s contract, defying his powerful father, and making an enemy of the dark alliance rising within the gargoyle courts. Saphira’s escape may have weakened the council’s plans, but it has placed a target on them both. Now Kain must decide how much he is willing to burn to keep her free. And Saphira must decide whether she can trust the tracker sent to capture her with the one thing she has fought hardest to protect - her heart.
The bounty wasn’t supposed to talk back. They told him that this bounty was supposed to be an easy find. That they wouldn't fight back.
