CHAPTER 1
CHAPTER 1
Kieran- first person
July 22nd
Today is my little sister's 18th birthday, and I’m standing here watching her pick out gifts I’ll never see again. My wallet is hurting just thinking about how much she has in the ultra, true religion, and Nike cart that’s continuously building. But it’s worth her smile.
“How does this look?" Raven says for the 100th time today. “Expensive” I reply dryly because I don’t know shit about makeup. Raven rolls her eyes at my response, she throws some type of tube with red stuff into the cart anyways. “Whatever” Raven replies with. “You know im not rich” I say, raising my eyebrow, but knowing damn well, I have enough money to buy the mall we’re at. “Anyways,” she replies “I heard about this new bakery that just opened, we should go”. I stare at her in shock, it’s not like her to want to go to a bakery, but I nod anyway, I’m not the person to just go into a bakery shop to get desserts. But since today is her birthday, we can go.
We walked to the register. I swipe my card for what feels like the millionth time but you only turn 18 once. I’ve been raising Raven alone since she was a baby, she sees me as her father even though I’m just her brother, our parents are deadbeats and favorites our little brother, who is 15. I’m 28, while Raven just turned 18 today. She just started art school and is a pretty good tattoo artist in the making.
I like to believe I did what I could, especially since I took her in when I was young, even though I’m pretty sure her head isn’t all the way there. We finally walk out of the trap of a mall and she’s talking about her nails. “How much?” I sigh.
“Oh my god really?!” She knew I was gonna give in to it, I do every time. I hand her my card to get her nails done. I watch her walk away, Raven's appearance usually gets her second glances especially since she dyed her hair dark purple and her butterfly sleeve, she did herself. But she never pays any attention to the second glances or the comments she gets from them.
I wait until she’s in her car before I turn to walk to mine. I drive a midnight black tinted windows Benz, my “normal” car. I don’t drive that often. I shoot her a text asking what she wants from the bakery. She says cheesecake. I start driving with one hand on the wheel, thumb tapping, the other sitting on the center console.
Then Jaxon texted me, when I got to a red light I grabbed my phone to look at what text he sent me, it was some shit about some rando asking questions… the wrong questions. Damnit. I grip the wheel and take the first u-turn. He told me to meet at our warehouse. I drove already pissed off.
When I get there Jaxon is already barking out orders, I park on the side to switch cars and pull in, I step out of the car walking over to Jaxon “What the fuck happened?!”
Jaxon gives the workers a look “move” he says before turning back to me “yo we might have to move sights”. “Whose asking questions.?” I counter raising an eyebrow. “5th street” I sigh rubbing my temple “alright, do you think you can handle the move, today is Raven’s birthday, and I’m supposed to be going to some new bakery that just opened up”. Jaxon nods, he goes back to giving orders, I head over to my car getting in. I pulled out heading to the bakery shop, which is now 15 minutes away since I had to make a detour.
When I finally park outside this bright ass building that’s still somehow hard to find it’s already 4:30. I switch gears and park sighing.
