Seeing the Wolf
‘Kicked out, running free, nowhere to go’ I thought to myself, running away from the only place I’ve ever called home. The more I ran, a soft purple glow grew, a city beyond the trees. I saw people with two long, bloodthirsty fangs. One was walking a huge wolf-dog ‘outcast’ I thought. But not even a second after that thought I knew I needed to blend in.
I ran from house to house smelling for anything other than blood, I finally found a house. Without a second thought I jumped through the window and started ransacking the freezer. I was so engulfed in eating my newfound blood sausage that I didn’t even notice that the owner of the house had turned on the kitchen light.”GAH!” I turn to face a tall, slim, pale being, “Bad dog!” He was a vampire. I needed to act helpless, so I let out a small, confused bark to him. It worked, the man instantly melted down to his knees, still looming over me. “You’re so lucky I have a soft spot for animals, now-” he examines the mess and broken window. “What do I do with you?” His voice was calm, he reached towards the scruff of my neck. With that calm voice I didn’t fight. His hands were shaking as he ran his fingers across my neck looking for a collar. After a few seconds of this he walks off, I don’t actually know why he did this? But when he came back I saw he was on his phone, phone? Did I bring my phone? What use is a phone when you’re an outcast?
“Thanks, Eva. See you soon.” He hung up and walked back to me, “Let's get you all cleaned up.” I snapped back from my thought, oh yeah- I’m covered in blood from the sausage. What was worse than being covered in blood was the fact that this vampire was just staring at me. It felt like what was forever, I started thinking again, can vampires read minds? Oh my lord what if he finds out I’m not actually a wolf-dog? “Come on pup” He called to me from the end of the hallway, great now he’s gonna murder me!
We enter his bathroom, it's stunning! ‘It’s all clean and pristine and marble and and…oh my lord is that a gold sink!?’ I can’t stop myself from looking all over. As I’m in awe of his bathroom I walk straight into a wall! Laughter bursts out of this man, how dare he! “What a silly little puppy!” At least he finds my pain amusing, maybe this won’t be so bad? After he finished washing all the red off me he turned back to his phone.
Just a little after my shower another vampire walks into his house! I thought vampires had manners? I assume that the female vampire is whom he was on the phone with just a while ago? “Is that the baby?” She approaches me. I already had enough with one vampire. I don't need two! They continue going back and forth talking about me and the mess I made alongside the damage I caused. Next thing I know, this Eva girl is putting a collar and leash on me!
We got to the vet. It’s one thing after another, now I’m getting poked with a SILVER needle. As any werewolf would I instantly wince in pain, I try nipping at the doctor but the male vampire pulls me closer to his chest and patting me on the snout. “We do not bite.” Again that calm voice came through, and instead of him melting it was me. I didn’t know I could melt for a vampire? Another round of poking had happened, this time they were looking for a chip? After that I was given a small piece of what looked like pig fat. Was I being rewarded?
When we got back to the vampire’s house he finished cleaning the mess I had made. Eva had tried petting me, she had on every finger but her thumb a silver ring or two. I knew the pain of silver and did not want to experience that again. So as she came closer I bit her finger “Tige it bit me! twice now it’s biting people!” It? Who is she calling an it? So his name is Tige, how lovely. “We need to put it down, can’t be having your dog bite people.” - “He just needs to get used to people.” Tige was again so calm, I could listen to his voice all day. “This is all probably new to him, so just let him adjust.” Tige gently pets me, His hands felt so soft on my thick fur. I licked his hand to hopefully show him that I’m good and friendly.
After a few hours had passed Eva had left and Tige was busy on his computer. All I could think about as he typed on his computer was the exile from my kingdom. I was so worried that somehow my brother would find me and kill me. Eventually I worried myself to sleep, I don’t think I dreamt at all. But I did wake up to the lovely smell of raw beef and blood. My tail wagging as I race from Tige’s bedroom to the kitchen! I already enjoy this, which is strange because all my life I was trained that vampires are ruthless killers who hate and skin werewolves. But Tige - he seemed different, almost caring? We ate dinner and Tige went back to his bedroom to continue typing. I wish I knew what it was about but I guess that doesn't matter now.
The sun was coming up, Tige took out a huge book from his bedside drawer. It had some kind of cross on it with a V at the top, is that the vampire's holy scripture? It might be, but the contest on the book didn’t worry me, it’s what Tige did next. He patted the bed next to him as he got under the covers. “Come here big boy - I think you need a name.” ‘Kavi’ I thought to myself as that is my actual name, but no way is this vampire gonna know that. “Ezra! Come here Ezra.” Being called a name rather than ‘Mutt’ was a great feeling, even if it wasn’t actually my name. I felt like I belonged, like I had a sense of purpose and that purpose was keeping Tige happy. After reading in his book, he turned off the nightlamp and went to sleep as the sun fully rose up.
Being awake at night is already so easy as that’s when me and my brother would hunt. Being asleep during the day though, that’s hard as I would rarely ever sleep when I was in the kingdom. And now that I’m living with someone other than family I feel the need to present myself. Every morning I will groom myself as if I was some strange werewolf-werecat hybrid. I would tiptoe around all his silver, recently Tige has picked up that I don’t like it. He had removed his jewelry and all his silver decorations were put on shelves and tables where I couldn’t reach. This vampire, Tige, was so sweet to me, maybe he can’t read minds?
Tige really was sweet, he learned what I did and didn’t like and stuck to what I liked, he even gave me a new name Ezzy. I’m really dreading the third month though, I still am conflicted by committing to being a wolf-dog, would Tige still care for me if I showed who I truly am? I don’t want to disappoint him but at the same time I’m so scared. If I don’t fully turn my pack after three months…my disowned family will still smell me if I go anywhere close to their territory, they will kill me on sight. I just can’t stand the fact of being trapped. I have feelings…
It’s been about a week of living with Tige. My view on vampires has changed, they love drinking and bringing home other vampires and kicking their wolf-dog out of the room for hours! Sometimes I feel appreciated though, like that time I ate a spider off the floor! Tige hugged me and petted me for a while after that, said I was brave too. I never thought I would be living with a vampire, everyday he types on his computer. I’m assuming he’s writing but his desk is one that you stand at so it's too high up for me to actually look at his screen, he doesn’t really stand rather than float there. Sometimes he’ll float around the house instead of walking. The only bad part living with Tige is Eva, she always finds ways to blame me and get me in trouble. Since day one has he had a personal vendetta against me, all because she was wearing silver rings and tried to touch me. Personally I blame her!
I just hope Tige decides to keep me forever.
