Chapter 1
Rain danced on the cobbled streets of Rosehill as Elara ducked into Café Serendipity, her favorite hidden gem that always smelled like warm vanilla and fresh starts. She wasn’t supposed to be there today—her morning meetings had been canceled last minute. She took it as a sign from the universe to slow down.
She stood in line, scrolling her phone, when a voice behind her said, “You’re about to order the hazelnut mocha, aren’t you?”
She turned, startled, locking eyes with a stranger who looked vaguely familiar. Tall, tousled dark hair, and a smile that seemed to tug on something inside her chest.
“I… yeah. How did you—”
“I was behind you here last week,” he said, his eyes twinkling. “You looked like you were having the worst day, but when they called out ‘hazelnut mocha,’ your whole face lit up. I never forgot that.”
Her cheeks flushed. “I didn’t even notice anyone behind me.”
“I noticed you,” he said softly.
The barista called out her order. The man stepped forward before she could react and paid for it.
“You didn’t have to do that!” she protested.
“I wanted to,” he said, handing it to her. “I’m Theo.”
“Elara.”
They sat across from each other, strangers wrapped in the warmth of coffee steam and curiosity. The conversation was effortless, filled with laughter, shared dreams, and the kind of silences that felt like exclamation points rather than pauses.
When she checked her phone an hour later, she realized she was late for everything—and she didn’t care.
“You’re not from around here, are you?” she asked.
He hesitated, then smiled. “Not exactly. I’m here for a few weeks. Work stuff. But… maybe now I’m here for more than that.”
Before she could respond, a woman walked in. She looked from Elara to Theo, eyes narrowing.
“There you are,” the woman said. “You disappeared again.”
Theo’s expression froze.
Elara blinked. “Is everything okay?”
The woman turned to her. “I’m his fiancée.”
