Chapter 1
Nelly stepped off the bus in Windhoek. The air was warm, even in the morning. Everything looked different from her old town. Tall buildings stood next to dusty streets. She held her bag tight. A new job, a new city. She felt a little scared, but mostly excited.
Her new workplace was a busy grocery shop downtown. Inside, fresh fruit stacked high, and the smell of bread filled the air. Nelly took a deep breath. This was it. Her first day. She learned how to put prices on cans and where to find the milk.
The hours passed quickly as she
unpacked boxes and helped customers.
Around midday, the shop door opened, and a man walked in. He was tall, with strong arms and a kind smile. He had dark, friendly eyes. He was handsome. Her stomach did a little flip.
He walked straight to the back, looking for something. Nelly watched him. He had a small list in his hand.
He came to her register with milk, eggs, and a big bag of coffee. As she scanned his items, he looked up at her.
"New here?" he asked, his voice low and friendly.
"Yes, my first day," Nelly replied, her cheeks feeling warm.
"Welcome to the neighborhood then," he said with a smile. "I'm Ben. I own the bar just across the street. We get our groceries here."
"Nelly," she replied, smiling back. Her heart beat a little faster. She watched him walk out, a paper bag in his hand.
The next week, Ben came into the grocery shop often. Nelly would see him walk through the door, and her heart would do that little flip again.
He always bought milk, eggs, and coffee for his bar.
"Morning, Nelly," he'd say, with that easy smile.
"Morning, Ben," she'd reply, trying not to blush.
One Tuesday, he came in looking for a special kind of flour. "My dad wants to try a new cake at the bar," he explained.
Nelly knew it was on the top shelf, past the cleaning supplies. It was a bit far. "I'll get it for you," she offered quickly, even though another customer was waiting.
She walked quickly to the back, found the bag, and brought it to him.
"Wow, you're fast," Ben said, a genuine laugh in his voice. "Thanks a lot, Nelly. You saved me a climb."
She smiled. "No problem." Helping him felt good. It felt important.
