Chapter 1
The night was unnervingly quiet, as if the city itself was holding its breath. Only the distant hum of traffic and the faint hiss of street lamps filled the air. Elara pulled her hood tighter around her face as she stepped into the alley, every shadow stretching like it wanted to reach for her.
She shouldn’t be here.
But she had no choice.
Her boots splashed in shallow puddles, and she winced at how loud each step sounded. The man waiting for her was not someone who appreciated lateness—or weakness.
And there he was.
Aiden Vale.
He stood casually against a sleek black car parked at the end of the alley, hands in the pockets of his tailored suit. The glow from the streetlamp lit up the sharp planes of his face, the dark hair pushed neatly back, the cold gleam in his eyes that could freeze a man where he stood.
Those eyes found her instantly.
“You’re late,” he said, voice low, almost bored. But Elara knew better. There was nothing casual about Aiden Vale.
She forced her chin up. “And you’re still alive. Guess we’re both disappointed.”
A flicker of something passed through his expression—amusement, maybe—but it was gone before she could name it. “You think you’re clever,” he said, pushing off the car and closing the distance between them. “But you’re here because you’re out of options. Don’t mistake that for leverage.”
Elara refused to back away, even though his presence was suffocating. He was taller, stronger, and far more dangerous than she’d ever admit, but fear was the last thing she wanted him to see.
“Don’t flatter yourself,” she said evenly. “This isn’t about you.”
His mouth curved—not a smile, but something darker. “Everything’s about me, sweetheart. Especially now.”
Her pulse thudded hard in her throat. She hated how calm he looked, how in control. Like he already knew why she’d come, knew the secrets she was trying so desperately to bury.
“I need answers,” Elara said, trying to keep her voice steady.
“You need a miracle,” Aiden corrected softly, stepping close enough that she could feel the subtle warmth radiating from him. “Your family has debts, Elara. Debts that cost lives. And you think I’m just going to hand you the truth out of kindness?”
She clenched her fists at her sides. “I don’t need your kindness. Just information.”
Aiden tilted his head slightly, studying her like a puzzle he wasn’t sure he wanted to solve. “Interesting,” he murmured. “You come here alone, unarmed, and demand answers from the man everyone else runs from. You must be either very brave… or very desperate.”
Her voice was ice. “Maybe I’m both.”
For the first time, his expression hardened. “Desperation gets people killed.”
Elara swallowed, willing herself not to flinch. “So does ignorance. You can help me, Aiden. Or you can get out of my way.”
There was a long silence, and she could hear the faint rustle of wind against the alley walls. Then he reached out—so sudden it made her breath hitch—and brushed his fingers lightly under her chin, forcing her to meet his gaze.
His eyes were endless, sharp enough to cut. “You’re not in a position to make demands, Elara,” he said softly. “I could crush you with a single word. Do you understand that?”
She wanted to say yes. She wanted to nod, to give him the submission he was so clearly used to. But she didn’t.
Instead, she whispered, “Do your worst.”
Aiden froze for the briefest second, then dropped his hand and stepped back. That almost-smile ghosted over his lips again, but there was nothing warm about it.
“You really have no idea what you’ve walked into,” he said.
She stayed silent, refusing to give him the satisfaction of a reaction.
“Fine,” he continued, voice cutting through the air like a blade. “If you want answers, you’ll get them. But not here. And not for free.”
Elara’s stomach tightened. “What do you mean?”
He leaned closer, his breath brushing her ear. “You’re going to work for me, sweetheart. Starting tonight.”
Her blood ran cold. “I’m not—”
“Yes,” he said, his tone sharp enough to make her fall silent. “You are. Unless you’d rather walk back into that pretty little world of yours and wait for my enemies to finish what they started with your family.”
She stiffened, her nails digging into her palms. “You don’t know anything about my family.”
He stepped back just far enough to look her dead in the eye. “Don’t I?”
Her heart stopped. Because in that moment, she knew he did. He knew everything.
Aiden Vale smiled then, slow and deliberate. “Come with me, Elara. Or stay here and watch your world burn. Your choice.”
Elara’s breath caught in her throat. The night felt heavier, the shadows deeper, and somewhere far above them, the stars were smothered by clouds.
She had no idea what she was about to step into.
But she knew one thing for certain.
There was no turning back.
