The Lonliest Girl In The World

The Loneliest Girl In The World

Tick. Tock.

Tick. Tock.

“Surely, it’s been over an hour by now, maybe two? 4am, at least?

2.37am. Heavy Sigh.”

The lights are out, and the room is dark enough that you can barely see. There is a small standby light coming from the television in the corner. It illuminates the room with an eerie blue glow that casts shadows over the walls. Dancing ghosts flicker in your peripheral, teasing you with the idea that sleep may never come.

The bed is warm and cosy, yet it still feels annoyingly uncomfortable. You toss and turn as though you are trying to escape from some kind of wild trap. However, with every position you slowly accept the possibility that you will ever break free from its unbearable grasp.

“Don’t check the time. Don’t check the time.”

But you check the time anyway. It’s 2.45am now.

You close your eyes and try to relax, willing your slow, steady breathing to pull you into the deep slumber that you so long for. In a desperate attempt to calm your mind, you concentrate on your body. You yearn for it to listen to your frantic cries for some form of tranquillity. Starting from your toes, you imagine each part of your body sinking delicately into the mattress. You long for your muscles to slowly unstiffen and to feel the tender fingers of sleep embrace you.

Instead, you are greeted with the insufferable voices in your mind reminding you that this is not going to happen. Heart racing, head spinning, you give in and sit up. You look around the room and scowl at the prancing shapes smiling tauntingly back at you from every wall and crevice. These are your companions of the night now. These are the ones that you must accept as your only fellowship as you continue your journey into the depths of loneliness.

It's 3.02am now, a time that you are more than familiar with. It’s the time when realisation hits that you are the only person awake in the world.
