Chapter 1 Making a Mess of the White House

The air in Washington hung thick with the damp residue of the previous night, a heavy weight pressing down. I pushed through the familiar heavy side door of the White House, wrought from oak and steel. Sam, the guard whose face was etched with the trenches of time, managed a weary smile in the dim pre-dawn light. "Mornin’, Labubu."

"Morning, Sam," I rasped, hoisting the heavy cleaning kit higher on my shoulder. My voice scraped, throat still rough from sleep—or perhaps the perpetual knot of displacement. Back in the Nordic Beast Kingdom, dawn carried the scent of frost on ancient pines and the distant howl of ice wolves, not this suffocating cocktail of disinfectant, polish, and raw power. The marble corridor stretched ahead, vast and cold, the chill seeping through the thin soles of my worn shoes. Overhead, immense crystal chandeliers cast long, distorted shadows in the minimal lighting, making the grand emptiness of the morning corridor feel unnerving, almost sepulchral. This was no palace of warmth; it was a mausoleum for the living.

I slipped into my "war room"—a cramped closet reeking sharply of ammonia and the metallic tang of old pipes. Space was so tight I could barely turn around amidst the buckets, mops, an array of chemical bottles, and the hulking vacuum cleaner. Yanking on the stiff, heavily starched white uniform felt like donning a thin suit of armor. *Princess of the Nordic Beast Kingdom? Here, that title meant less than the dust I erased. Just a cog in the White House's immaculate machine.* Pushing the cleaning cart out, the rubber wheels squeaked a monotonous protest against the polished floor, the sound absurdly loud in the profound silence.

The Presidential Office doors loomed ahead, massive and carved from dark oak, silent as judgmental sentinels. I knew the room beyond was likely empty this early, but proximity alone summoned an intangible pressure, the weight of decisions that shaped the world. I knelt, my movements reverent as I began meticulously wiping the subtle baseboard trim beneath the imposing doors. *Kings' blood once stained the snow beneath my boots in the Northern Wars. Now I erase the footprints of bureaucrats.* The faint lemon scent of the cleaner offered a fleeting respite from the building's pervasive tension.

"Labubu!"

The hissed whisper made me flinch. I knew that voice. Lily, my friend from the bustling coffee shop nearby, materialized behind me, clutching a large tray laden with insulated coffee cups and paper bags exuding the warm aroma of fresh pastries. Her dark brown apron was crisp against the white corridor. Lily supplied caffeine to the harried senior aides.

"Keep it down, Lily," I whispered back over my shoulder, not pausing my scrubbing. "This isn't the coffee shop."

"Right, right," Lily leaned in conspiratorially, her eyes alight with the thrill of gossip. "Rules thicker than fog! But guess whose stretch Cadillac just pulled in downstairs?" She paused dramatically, relishing my lack of reaction. "*Him!* The 'Big Boss'! This early? Bet he didn't sleep a wink, or spent all night rage-tweeting!"

My hand faltered almost imperceptibly. "Big Boss" meant only one person: President Donald J. Trump. The name itself crackled with energy, demanding instant attention. Images flashed: the signature gestures, the defiant sweep of gold hair, that voice like a battering ram of certainty.

"What does his schedule have to do with floor wax?" I forced my voice flat, focusing intently on a spotless section of trim.

"Labubu! You're literally ground zero!" Lily rolled her eyes dramatically. "Right outside that door!" She jerked her chin towards the imposing office doors. "Imagine! What if he steps out and sees you, diligently working away? What if he—"

"—fires me for obstructing the presidential path? Highly probable." I stood, tossing my cloth into the bucket with more force than necessary. "He's the sun. I'm a mop bucket. Our orbits don't intersect."

Her gaze suddenly snagged on a waist-high metal file tower leaning precariously against the wall nearby. It looked hastily used, several thick folders stacked haphazardly on top. One, bound in deep crimson, dangerously overhung the edge, its cover screaming "EYES ONLY" and "CONFIDENTIAL" in stark black capitals. It was a heartbeat from kissing the cold marble.

Professional instinct kicked in. I needed to nudge it back. Avoidable trouble. This was too close to the storm's eye.

My fingertips were a hair's breadth from the offending folder's edge when—

"Labubu! Look!" Lily's elbow jabbed into my side, her voice a strangled squeak of excitement. "Miller! The Chief of Staff! Gods, why is he here so early? And he looks ready to chew nails!"

The unexpected shove threw me off balance. My outstretched hand didn't push the file; it slammed hard into the tower's weakest support joint.

CRASH!

Time fractured. Metal shrieked against unforgiving marble. Then came the horrifying cascade—a blizzard of paper exploding into the air, fluttering, spiraling, crashing down in a chaotic white shroud. Thick folders, binders, loose sheets—a desperate, flailing funeral for order. They blanketed the pristine floor I'd just cleaned. The sharp corner of a heavy binder cracked down on my canvas shoe, sending a lance of pain through my foot. I gasped, sucking in a breath laced with dust and panic.

The world tilted. Pure, ice-cold terror flooded my veins, drowning me. The roar of blood in my ears drowned out Lily's choked scream of horror. Done. Utterly finished. The President's office! Right there! I couldn't bear to think if the sound had penetrated that sanctum.

"OH, SHIT!" Lily stood frozen, face bleached of color, her tray trembling precariously.

Then came the sound worse than Lily's curse. It erupted from behind the massive oak door, a thunderclap of pure, undiluted fury:

"WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT?!"

BANG!

The door was wrenched open with violent force, crashing against the doorstop.

He filled the doorway. The unmistakable sweep of gold hair, even in the dim light, was like a harsh crown. Impeccably tailored navy suit stretched across broad shoulders. The face, so familiar from screens and front pages, was now contorted with rage. Donald J. Trump. His chest heaved, his blue tie slightly askew. Those eyes—usually sharp, now burning with icy fury—like poisoned daggers, instantly pinned me: a small, pale figure crouched amidst the paper carnage, clutching a single sheet, utterly paralyzed.

An invisible tsunami of pressure crashed through the space. The air vanished, replaced by suffocating authority and white-hot anger.

Lily's hands shook violently, the cups on her tray rattling a frantic counterpoint. She shrank back, as if wishing the wall would swallow her.

The President's gaze swept the disaster with the cold contempt reserved for garbage. It finally settled back on me, a laser-guided missile finding its target.

His thin lips pressed into a merciless line. His chin lifted in that innate, imperious tilt. He took one deliberate step forward. His gleaming black dress shoe crunched onto a stray document, the sound a tiny, heartbreaking tear in the silence. A death knell.

He stopped directly before me. His shadow engulfed me completely. I felt microscopic, a speck of dust trembling before a hurricane. The expensive, cold, aggressively masculine scent of his cologne reached me—utterly alien compared to the woodsmoke and wild herbs of my homeland.

He leaned down slightly, the movement radiating predatory menace. His gaze, sharp as a scalpel, raked over my fear-bleached face, finally locking onto my eyes—wide with terror, brimming with unshed tears. They felt raw, exposed.

"You," his voice dropped, lower than the shout but infinitely more terrifying. Each word felt dredged from an ice floe. "Tell me." A deliberate pause. His eyes flicked to my name badge, viewing it like something unclean. "Labubu? Who gave you permission," he emphasized each syllable, the words metallic, "to create this… this demolition derby outside the Oval Office?"

My mind blanked. Language evaporated under the onslaught. My mouth opened, only useless, fractured gasps escaping. I was a fish stranded on hot sand, mouth working soundlessly. Terror gripped my throat, stole my breath, shattered thought. I could only stare up at that wrathful face, feeling my soul freeze and shatter under its glacial scrutiny.

"I… I…" I finally scraped a sound from my petrified throat, thin and trembling as a gnat's wing. "Sorry… Mr. President… I… it was an accident… it… it fell…" The excuse was ash in my mouth. Tears welled, blurring the furious visage before me.

"Fell?" He scoffed, the sound like ice cracking. He straightened, planting his hands on his hips, surveying the mess with the disdain of a man viewing landfill. "That's the best excuse for incompetence? Is the White House paying you to wreck the place? Or did you mistake my doorway for a bowling lane?" The lash of his words flayed my already shredded nerves.

He nudged a splayed-open file with the gleaming toe of his shoe, the gesture dismissive, repulsed. "Look at this! Classified documents! Treated like trash! Do you have any idea what might be in these? Do you comprehend the magnitude of your incompetence?!"

Each question was a hammer blow. The world spun; the cold walls pressed in. I curled in on myself, fingers digging into the rough fabric of my pants, a flimsy anchor. Tears broke free, hot and heavy, splashing onto the scattered papers, blooming dark stains. I choked back sobs, biting my lip hard, my body wracked with violent tremors.

"Useless!" Trump watched my disintegration, his scowl deepening, disgust radiating from him. "Zero professionalism! The White House doesn't need—"

Heavy, rapid footsteps cut him off. Miller, the Chief of Staff, a man carved from granite in a perfectly pressed suit, materialized like a grim shadow. His gaze swept the scene—the wreckage, my crumpled form, the terrified Lily—before locking onto the President, a human bulwark against the storm.

"Mr. President!" Miller's voice was clipped, respectful, yet charged with authority. He positioned himself subtly between Trump and the chaos. "Allow me to handle this!" His laser focus snapped to Lily. "You! Unauthorized personnel! *Leave! Immediately!*" The command brooked no argument.

Lily flinched as if struck. She cast one last terrified, apologetic glance at me, then fled, the clatter of her heels receding rapidly down the corridor.

Miller's gaze, coldly evaluative, turned back to me. He addressed Trump, his tone devoid of warmth: "Sir, I'll manage the situation. Security will be involved. The responsible party will be fully investigated and face appropriate consequences." A pause, then the hammer blow delivered with bureaucratic precision: "Including termination and potential legal action." He pulled out his phone, thumb hovering.

Termination. Legal action. The words were a death sentence. Black spots danced before my eyes. Overwhelming despair. Job gone. Worse to come. Run. Escape. I scrambled up, ignoring the pain in my foot, the humiliation clinging to me like a shroud, desperate only to vanish.

"STOP."

The command was an invisible chain, snapping taut around my ankles.

I froze, back turned to the source of my terror, body rigid as stone. I couldn't turn. My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird.

Footsteps. Slow. Measured. Approaching from behind. This is it. Dragged away. Like cargo.

The expected violence didn't come.

Seconds stretched, thick with suffocating silence. Then, a sound that didn't fit. Not rage. Something else. Low, almost… perplexed. It cut through the stillness near my ear:

"Your eyes…"

I flinched. Slowly, infinitesimally, I turned.

He stood close. Too close. I could see the fine weave of his navy suit, the cold glint of the eagle-shaped tie pin. But his eyes—they weren't on the suit, or the pin. They were locked onto mine. Intensely focused, probing, dissecting. The fury was still there, a banked fire, but beneath it… something was disrupted. A flicker of… confusion? Surprise? Or… a fleeting, inexplicable softness? For a fraction of a second, it was there—a crack in the permafrost, a spark of impossible warmth instantly swallowed by the deeper cold.

I was stunned. Fear, pain, tears—all forgotten. I just stared back, wide-eyed, tears clinging to my lashes, reflecting the dim light like dark, rain-washed stones. Pure, unguarded vulnerability meeting the gaze of the man who held my fate.

Time suspended. Only the low hum of the HVAC broke the silence. Miller stood frozen, phone half-raised, his expression a mask of profound confusion at the President's uncharacteristic pause.

The moment shattered. Trump seemed to jolt back to himself. He straightened abruptly, his face hardening, the familiar mask of imperious command slamming back into place as if the brief vulnerability had never existed. He deliberately looked away from me, addressing Miller, his voice regaining its accustomed edge of impatient command:

"Get this cleaned up!" He gestured sharply at the mess. "Every. Single. Sheet." Then the final edict, glacial and absolute: "And make sure she disappears. I do not want to see her in this wing ever again."

He turned on his heel without another glance, the sharp swish of his suit coat a punctuation mark. He strode back into the Oval Office.

BANG!

The door slammed shut behind him, the sound echoing like the sealing of a tomb down the empty corridor. It was a reprieve from immediate destruction, but it felt like a life sentence of disgrace and exile.

My legs gave way. I collapsed back onto the cold marble amidst the scattered papers, the "TOP SECRET" stamp blurring under a fresh wave of silent tears. Labubu, Princess of the Nordic Beast Kingdom, reduced to weeping on a conqueror's floor. My reflection in the polished stone stared back—a ghostly face, dominated by wide, wet eyes. Eyes that, for one impossible heartbeat, had momentarily fractured the gaze of the most powerful man on Earth. Eyes that remembered a throne forged in ice and fire, now lost.
