Chapter 1: The Empty life of a billionaire

Maximilian Romano sat regally in his high-backed chair, the picture of authority in his dimly lit office. It was late evening, and the lights in the entire building had been turned down low, casting him and his personal assistant, Alpheus, in shadows. This enveloping darkness mirrored the turmoil he felt inside, creating a strangely calming atmosphere. The only source of light came from the moon outside, which added a touch of peace to his isolation.

He turned his chair away from Alpheus to gaze out through the expansive floor-to-ceiling windows, where the city skyline twinkled like a field of diamonds. But even with such a breathtaking view spread before him, an undeniable sense of emptiness lingered.

Maximilian, a tech titan, seemed to have it all—wealth, influence, and power. Yet this fortune came at a steep cost. Every relationship in his life felt shallow; it seemed everyone was more interested in what he could provide financially than in who he really was. What he truly craved was something authentic, something real.

Thoughts of his failed marriage, which had stumbled to a close in under two years, crept back into his mind. The woman he once believed to be his soulmate had left him with a hefty divorce settlement, leaving him feeling abandoned and shattered.

Since then, his dating experiences had been a montage of brief flings and shallow connections. Many women seemed keen to be associated with his fame and fortune, rather than showing any genuine interest in him. It left him feeling like little more than a trophy, rather than someone worthy of real love.

A particularly striking memory flashed in his mind: a date with a socialite named Rachel, who had messaged him expressing a desire to meet. Curious about how their dynamic might have shifted, he agreed to meet her for coffee.

Rachel was charming and beautiful, but their conversations always seemed to drift back to materialism and social status. Seated at a trendy café, she launched into a lengthy discussion about her latest designer handbag and shoes, while Maximilian nodded along, feeling a sense of déjà vu.

When she inquired about his latest business venture, Maximilian hesitated, unsure of what to reveal. The moment he mentioned the prospect of big profits, Rachel's eyes sparkled, and she began to ask about his bank balance and the cars he drove. In that instant, Maximilian realized he needed to seek a different path.

As they parted, he couldn’t shake the feeling of being trapped in a never-ending cycle of superficial relationships. Deep down, he yearned for something authentic that could bring him genuine happiness.

That’s when a thought struck him. What if he could live without his wealth? What if he could escape this shallow world entirely? He started brainstorming ways to keep his identity under wraps—creating a new persona, searching for a modest apartment. The idea of starting fresh sent a thrill of excitement through him, but he knew he would need someone he could trust to oversee the company during this transition. That’s when he thought of Alpheus.

“Are you really sure about this?” Alpheus Carter, his loyal personal assistant, asked skeptically. What was Maximilian sure of? He had every intention of following through with his plan, but he needed Alpheus on board.

Alpheus wasn’t merely a PA; he was Maximilian’s closest friend and the one person he could confide in. Now, though, he was challenging Maximilian’s decisions. Since his divorce two years prior, Maximilian had been weighing his options for escaping the hollow existence he had found himself in.

“Yes, I’m convinced this is the right path,” Maximilian replied after a moment of thought. “I didn’t step back from the limelight two years ago for nothing. I want to experience a different life—something more peaceful than this chaos.”

The idea of losing his wealth and status had been nagging at him for a while, but he felt conflicted about it. The more he thought about it, the more he questioned whether he could actually find someone who loved him for who he was, not just for his money.

Alpheus glanced at his friend, his forehead creased in frustration; he found Maximilian incredibly annoying. This was especially true since Maximilian often devised schemes that only burdened Alpheus with more work. His tendency to handle errands and attend meetings on Maximilian's behalf had led some board members to think his boss was unwell. “So, what’s your grand plan to change things up?” he asked.

“I'm going to embrace a life of poverty,” Max said, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.

“Are you serious? Please tell me that beard isn't some sort of ploy to look like a hobo!” Alpheus replied, his disbelief evident.

“Not exactly,” Max clarified. “I need you to help me find a decent job that doesn’t scream wealth. That way, I can present myself as someone from a less fortunate background.” He then turned to his assistant, handing him a list of tasks he expected completed by the end of the month.

The list included:

1. Develop a new identity with false documents and a convincing backstory.

2. Find a modest apartment that wouldn’t attract attention to his wealth.

3. Secure a regular job that would challenge him and allow him to interact with people from different walks of life.

Alpheus blinked in shock as he looked at the list; he couldn’t believe how serious Max really was. He never thought Maximilian would take his jokes so far, but it was clear that he needed to step up and assist his friend before he ended up in a mental hospital.

“Who's going to run the company while you're off on this wild adventure? How do I explain your sudden absence to the board?" Alpheus asked, anxiety creeping into his voice. He couldn't believe his boss was really losing it this time.

“You’ll run it,” Maximilian said calmly, as if it were the simplest thing in the world. “As the new CEO, you’ll need to devise a plan to reassure them.”

Alpheus stared at him, utterly flabbergasted, as if Maximilian had grown a second head. Working for this man already felt overwhelming, but the thought of actually managing the company was like jumping into the deepest end of a pool with no lifeguard.

“Are you kidding? How am I supposed to handle this company? We need someone with way more experience. I’m just a personal assistant, for crying out loud! I’m nowhere near qualified to run a big operation like this!” Alpheus exclaimed.

“Relax, Alpheus. You’re more capable than you think. Everyone makes mistakes, and if you ever find yourself in a bind, just call me. However, I don’t expect you to reach out every time—only if things get really tough. Got it?” Maximilian replied.

“Honestly, I should have found a new job before this nonsense became my reality,” Alpheus said.

That made Maximilian laugh as he rose from his chair, grabbed his laptop, and leaned against the desk in front of Alpheus. Giving Alpheus a friendly pat on the shoulder, he said, “We both know you’d be lost without me; we’re practically inseparable.”

As much as it annoyed him, Maximilian was right—he was a good boss, and Alpheus earned more than the average salary. Still, working for him was no walk in the park. Alpheus had no choice but to accept the temporary CEO role, knowing full well he couldn't win a debate against his boss.

“Alright, I’ll compile a list of job options for you by tomorrow, so you can choose what suits you best,” Alpheus conceded.

“Thanks, I really appreciate it,” Max said, stepping away from the desk. Alpheus followed him like a loyal sidekick as they exited the office together.

The moment Maximilian stepped into his apartment, he made a beeline for his bedroom, craving a refreshing shower. An hour later, feeling rejuvenated, he made his way downstairs to the cabinet and poured himself a glass of premium brandy. Then, he stepped out onto the spacious balcony of his penthouse for a leisurely stroll.

The cool breeze sparked new ideas in his mind as he settled onto the couch, placing his glass on the side table. Lost in his thoughts and savoring the peaceful moments, he was abruptly brought back to reality by the buzz of his phone. With a sigh, he half-expected it to be a flurry of notifications from social media. Instead, it was an email from his personal assistant, Alpheus.

Curious, he opened the message to find that his rather grumpy assistant had compiled a list of tasks for him to consider. A sense of determination washed over him. He felt ready to embrace life like a regular person, and he couldn’t help but appreciate Alpheus's hard work, especially since it was all for non-business-related matters.
