Summary

Step into the perplexing and passionate world of "Alternate Timelines," where a single, enigmatic figure offers a man the ultimate second chance, but at an unpredictable cost. Meet John, a man burdened by regret and the feeling of a life wasted, living alone and miserable in a remote cottage. His life has been a series of failures and lost loves, marked by "too much chopping and changing". The catalyst for change is Jadmina, a woman who appears seemingly out of nowhere, her presence capable of restarting John's life or subtly altering his timeline. The catch? Expressing a wish around her can make that wish already come true, often plunging him into a new reality. He's encountered her multiple times, experiencing various versions of his life, always ending up back where he started, alone and regretful. This time is different. After meeting Jadmina in a Yorkshire pub, John is sent back – but he retains his memories of his past failures and, crucially, knowledge of the future. He finds himself back at age sixteen, at the moment he first made love with Eloise. This Eloise is his first love, but in his past lives, he messed up, treated her badly, and drifted away, leading to a chain of further mistakes and failed relationships. Now, armed with foreknowledge and the painful lessons of repeated failures, John is determined to get it right.

Author's Forward

This is a story it took a long time to write with a couple of miss-starts.

There are two major problems with time-travel type stories. Either the hero goes back in time, has to avoid meeting themselves, because paradox, or changing the past, because if they do, they have an uncertain future to return home to. The other version is where you get to relive your life by going back and starting again. The issue there is that if you did start again, as you, in the same place, with the same knowledge and faced with the same decisions, why would you not make the same choices? Not much of a story is it, just doing every thing again?

So, we have to start again, but with what you already know, but with the body and situation you had back then. But of course you can't take anything with you, just your memories, and a determination to do things right this time.

But just as you go back in time, you go back to an earlier time. Times have changed, and so have people's morals, laws and an acceptance of what is right and wrong. Very often today, people view that past through the eyes of today, condemning what was done as unacceptable. But it wasn't at that time.

Which is why this book was so hard to write and so hard to get published. Part of it is set in the United Kingdom of the early nineteen seventies. I chose that era because I was around then and can remember what it was like. I'm not relying on of modern documentation written for today's eyes and sensibilities. Most importantly, the age of consent for heterosexual sexual acts was sixteen, as was the age at which you could get married, albeit with your parents' consent. And people did get married at sixteen, frequently into marriages that survive until today. There were plenty of grandmothers who were in their early thirties.

I don't have an opinion on this. It was what it was. That was the law and most people abided by it. The country was not long out of a second world war, and there was still a feeling that people needed to rebuild the population. Instead of frowning on young people falling in love, on the whole it was encouraged. People who were now parents remembered their friends who were killed before having a chance to start a family.

So, this is a tale of love; young love, young enduring love, love of the type that survives when only it is given a chance. It is currently available to buy on Smashwords as a downloadable e-book. Paste this link into a browser: https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/1433337

Whether this will get past the Inkitt censors, I don't know. Parts of it would be illegal today in some places. They weren't where and when I imagine them taking place. Imagine being the operative word. This is a work of fiction, characters, places, events. Just set in a world I remember.
