Chapter One
Didi Harrison, a strikingly beautiful 25-year-old woman, was seated in the business class section of an American Airlines flight from New York to Abuja, Nigeria. Her light skin, a testament to her Nigerian heritage from the Ikwerre descent in Rivers State, radiated with an effortless glow. Absorbed in the pages of Fashion Entertainment Daily Magazine, she epitomized elegance and sophistication. Didi’s impeccable grooming mirrored her impressive academic achievements, holding both a BSc and a master’s degree in cyber security from Harvard University.
On the same flight, sitting right across from Didi, was Alex Waters, a 30-year-old American fashion magnate, known for his impeccable style. He exudes an effortless elegance, wrapped in shadows you long to explore. Everything about Alex screamed bespoke fashion and sophistication—from his perfectly styled hair and custom-made suit to his Rolex watch and gleaming leather shoes.
He couldn’t help but covertly appraise the woman across from him, noting her gorgeously curled hair, stylish shirt dress, full and rosy lips, delicately manicured nails, and stunning heels. She was, in a word, mesmerizing.
An Air Hostess came to serve Didi some Mimosa. As she leafed through the magazine, she causally sipped the cocktail. She soon came across a full-page profile picture that seemed vaguely familiar. She tried to search her memory for details but couldn’t quite find the place where she had seen the face.
Suddenly, she glanced up and was startled to see the very same man sitting adjacent to her.
Alex caught her gaze and smiled. “Yeah, that’s me. I get that quite a lot, you know.” He extended his hand. “I’m Alex Waters.”
Didi, slightly amused and intrigued, shook his hand.“Didi Harrison,” she said with a warm smile, feeling a jolt of electricity from the contact and restlessly disengaged her hand.
Alex’s gaze locked on hers for a few more seconds. Apparently, he had felt the same impact from their momentary connection. After what felt like an eternity, he asks, “You’re Nigerian, I guess?” noticing her features.
“Yes, I am, but I live in New York,” Didi replied.
“Oh, me too. So, what do you do, Didi?”
“I’m a cyber security expert with Maisons Century, New York,” she answered.
“Maisons Century! Wow, that’s impressive. Nice stuff! Not just anyone works there, you know. You must be smart,” he added with a smile.
“Thank you,” Didi said, appreciating his genuine interest.
“You’re welcome. Well, as you’ve already discovered, I’m deeply involved in the fashion industry, and I’m heading to Nigeria for the upcoming Fashion Week. I’m supposed to give a lecture. I hope you will be there?”
“Is that meant to be a direct invitation of some sort?” Didi teased.
“Oh well, you can call it that. I wouldn’t mind if you would be my plus one for the event,” Alex said, smiling.
“Well, if you put it that way, it definitely deserves some consideration,” Didi responded with a playful smile.
“Okay. So, can I have your phone details?”
“Oh, sure.”
Soon, there was an announcement that the Plane was preparing to land in Abuja. They both exchanged their contact information before the flight landed.
“You know what? Why don’t I offer you a ride to your destination? My ride is already on standby,” Alex added.
Didi replied with a smile, “Never mind, my younger brother is also on standby. Thanks for offering anyway.”
“Okay, but I’m still going to call you later tonight, if you don’t mind.”
“Not a problem. You take care now.” Didi commented.
“Wishing you same.” Alex replied.
As the plane descended, Didi reflected on the chance encounter. She couldn’t deny that Alex was charming and intriguing. His combination of sophistication and mystery piqued her curiosity. Meanwhile, Alex was equally captivated by Didi. Her intelligence, beauty, and confident demeanor were a rare combination that he found irresistible.
Didi exited the arrival wing of Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, feeling a mix of exhaustion and excitement. The airport buzzed with activity, filled with travelers and the sounds of a major international hub. Didi navigated through the crowd, her eyes scanning for her younger brother, Tobe. The humid warmth of Nigeria enveloped her, a stark contrast to the airplane’s cool interior. Finally, she spotted him.
Tobe, standing a bit taller than she remembered, his face glowing with anticipation. He had been waiting for her for the past two hours, and the moment their eyes met, his expression transformed into pure joy. He waved enthusiastically, and she quickened her pace, her heart pounding with excitement.
“Tobe!” Didi called out, her voice rising above the airport noise.
“Didi!” Tobe shouted back, weaving through the crowd to meet her halfway.
They embraced tightly, the two years since they had last seen each other disappearing in an instant.
“I can’t believe you’re here,” Didi said, her voice muffled against his shoulder. She pulled back to look at him, her eyes shining. “You’ve grown so much!”
“And you look even more beautiful than I remembered,” Tobe replied, grinning broadly. “I’ve missed you, sis.”
“I’ve missed you too,” Didi said, her smile widening.
They hugged again, savoring the moment of re-connection. As they made their way to the baggage claim, they chatted animatedly. Tobe helped Didi retrieve her luggage, and they continued their conversation as they walked toward the parking lot.
“So, tell me everything,” Didi said. “How are Mom and Dad? What’s new with you?”
“Mom and Dad are great,” Tobe replied cheerfully. “They’re so proud of you. And as for me, I’ve got some news. I’ve been accepted into a master’s program in the United States.
”Didi stopped in her tracks, her eyes wide with surprise and pride. “Tobe, that’s amazing! Where are you going?”
“MIT,” he said, a hint of pride in his voice. “I’m going to study computer engineering.”
“Wow, MIT! That’s incredible,” Didi exclaimed, giving him a playful punch on the arm. “I knew you had it in you. I’m so proud of you.”
They reached the car, a sleek, black SUV, and Tobe opened the trunk. As he lifted Didi’s suitcase into the back, they continued their conversation, delving into the details of his upcoming move.
“When do you leave?” Didi asked, leaning against the car.
“In a month,” Tobe replied, closing the trunk and turning to face her. “I’m nervous but excited. It’s a big step, and I’m ready for it.”
“You’ll do great,” Didi assured him. “It’s going to be an amazing experience. And I’ll be there to help you settle in. We’ll be in the same country again, just like old times
“That sounds perfect,” Tobe said, his eyes reflecting the same excitement and anticipation that Didi felt.
They drove through the bustling streets of Abuja, continuing to talk, sharing stories and catching up on everything they had missed in each other’s lives. The city outside the car windows was alive with activity, but inside, it was a cocoon of sibling connection and shared dreams. Didi learned about Tobe’s preparations for his move, his excitement about the program, and his hopes for the future. Tobe, in turn, listened to Didi’s experiences in New York, her challenges, and her triumphs. They laughed, reminisced, and bonded over their shared ambitions and the close relationship they had always had. The drive to their family home felt both too short and wonderfully long, filled with the joy of re-connection and the promise of new adventures. By the time they arrived, Didi felt rejuvenated, her heart full of love and pride for her brother.
