Prologue

FLORENCE

Descending the stairs, I stepped slowly into the living room. The old floorboards creaked beneath me as I watched and watched... and watched. The chandelier above my head, moved dangerously as the wind howled in the surroundings and entered into the hallway through a broken window that was never fixed.

Anyone could jump in from that window. I shivered at the thought. After staring for what seemed like an eternity, I tore my eyes away. And that's when from my peripheral vision I saw something quickly getting away. My hands trembled and my teeth clattered.

When I looked at the same place again, I felt something missing from my previous image.

Something was there. Or, someone was definitely there.

Grandma was sleeping soundly next door. I couldn't grasp the idea of her becoming so brave of staying here all alone, with these broken things.

Shaking the thoughts away, I quickly grabbed a glass to get some water and chugged it down my throat.

I kept the glass as I felt the hairs on the back of my neck rising, I felt something off. Just as I was about to turn around, someone covered my eyes.

"Don't you dare scream, Solana."
