Chapter 1: Same Day
I gaze into the mirror as I shave, wondering why I was born. I have to disguise myself as a rabbit to hide. If I took on my natural appearance, I would be hunted and killed. I don’t think any others of my kind exist. I am a labubu. Basically, I look like a demented bunny mixed with an elf. I have sharp teeth, large ears, and a scruffy appearance. It would have been so much easier to be a wolf, deer, or even a dragon shifter. However, the goddess chose not to bless me. She has yet to bless me with a mate, too, which further makes me think that I am the only labubu in existence.
So, I am a rabbit in a wolf’s den. My human form isn’t as tall and muscular as the others in my pack, but I am larger than some Omegas. Spring is quickly approaching the Moonbeam Pack, and with its arrival, the Haze comes. The Haze is where most unmated males leave our territory in search of their mate. Some return after a month with their mate, while others don’t; however, they do return with some outlandish stories.
Blane, another unmated Omega in the pack, returned last season, saying how he had found these amazing twins and the positions that they tried. I didn’t leave the territory last year; instead, I hid in my elven den, which many mistake for a tiny rabbit hole. I enjoy the company of females, but I don’t get the satisfaction that the others do from their trysts. Perhaps it’s because of the type of being that I am, or perhaps not.
Blane pokes his head in, “Man, hurry up. The Alpha is coming with us this season.”
Great, just great. Is Moonbeam’s young Alpha strong and a good leader? Yes, Mich is, but he is also a stickler for rules, which means that he will check in on all of us. That means that I can’t hide in my hole. Fuck!
I grab my bag and leave the comfort and security of my room. On the way outside to meet the others, I am stopped by Momma June, our Luna, and the woman I have come to consider my mother since I don’t remember mine, “Bruce, can I have a quick word with you?”
“Anything for you, but if Mich gives me hell…”
She giggles as she takes my arm, “My boy, one day I hope that you see yourself as I see you.” We sit on a bench not far from where the others are gathering, but we are out of earshot as she continues, “Yes, you are different from many of the wolves here, and it’s not because of how we found you.”
June was out for a walk with Draven, her mate, and Moonbeam’s Alpha when they heard a commotion. June was pregnant with Mich at the time, so it took them longer than normal to reach the scene. Because once a wolf is pregnant, she can’t shift. When they did, they found me covered in blood, surrounded by body parts. I was only a few weeks old. Momma June took me into her arms and has yet to let me go.
I love her for that, I really do, but I am a bunny-type elven thing trapped in a wolf’s den. I don’t shift like wolves do either. I am either human or labubu, but I can use magic to alter my labubu form. However, the best I can do so far is a demented bunny. When she found me, I just looked like a small human baby. Being a Luna, she no doubt knew that I wasn’t human. “Momma, I know and I will be safe. I promise. You know that Mich will barely let me out of his sight. Besides, I won’t find my mate. I doubt she exists.”
She looks into my eyes, “Bruce, we all thought that at one point. Just because your wolf doesn’t think so because he’s too shy to come out, doesn’t mean you won’t find her. Because believe me, when you know, you’ll know.” She pats my back as I get up to leave, “Oh, and son, don’t go along with any of Mich’s schemes. I don’t care that he’s Alpha now. That boy needs to realize that he can’t control everything.”
I nod and kiss her cheek. She is right that Mich is a control freak, but aren’t all Alphas? I can’t dwell on it because I need to go pretend to be a guy with a sleeping wolf and not a labubu. But that doesn’t mean that I can’t cause some mischief.
“Let’s go enjoy some women and see if any of us finds a mate,” Mich says as he motions for all of us to go. There are only six of us, including Mich, and I pray silently to the goddess, ’If you can hear me, please keep them from eating me.’ I have no clue if she heard my thoughts, but a little divine intervention can’t hurt, can it?
A week has passed. We are in the Inbetween. It is where our world, the world of shifters, mixes with other worlds like the human one. Two of the guys with us found their human mates. Mich sent them back to Moonbeam. That just leaves me, Blane, Zach, and Mich.
“I have an idea. Get dressed, guys, because we are going clubbing,” Mich announces.
I love music, but I can’t dance. I have no rhythm. But I have no choice but to go since I can’t risk them suspecting that I am not a wolf shifter. We got to the club and it wasn’t what I was expecting. People are drinking and dancing, but it is what they are and aren’t wearing that gets my attention.
Mich looks over and grins, “Tonight we are living on the wild side, guys. Our primal nature can come out to play, and no one will be the wiser. Now let’s go find a pet to play with.”
I will just hang out here upstairs where I can overlook the crowd below. I have no desire to go hunting, not tonight and likely not ever. However, after a few hours, I saw a small group of women enter, and I felt an odd energy. One of them must be a witch. I have never interacted with one, but I have studied them. Momma made sure that we were well-versed in the various species that exist. I see Blane approach one of them, and she goes off with him. I hope he found his mate and not a plaything. Blane has been a good friend, and he’s one of the few who don’t treat me differently because Moonbeam’s royal family took me in.
While I was distracted, I felt that energy again, but this time it was intense. I turned, and there, standing in front of me, was the embodiment of the goddess herself. She smiled, “Hey, my name is Susie. Why aren’t you down there with your friends as they play with mine?”
It was the woman who I felt had energy emanating from when she walked in. My mouth was suddenly dry, and my palms were sweaty. I stammered, “Well…hi. I am…am…Bruce.”
Her smile widened as she invaded my personal space to run her hand down my chest, “You’re different, Bruce, and I like that. I like that very much.”
“Would you like to go get a room?” I chew on my bottom lip because I am never so bold, especially when it comes to beautiful women. And this woman before me is beautiful, even though her scent resonates and arouses me.
As she takes my hand and leads us off to find a private room, I feel this shock as something inside me awakens. Fuck! She’s my mate! But how? She isn’t a labubu, is she?
