Chapter 1 : The crescent and the glance

It was the last evening of Ramzan. The street near the mosque felt alive in a soft, sacred way — the kind of calm that wraps around everything quietly. The azaan had just ended, the lights along the lanes glowed warm, and the scent of biryani and rosewater hung gently in the air.

Ayla wasn’t supposed to be there.

She was just visiting her aunt’s house — a simple plan, nothing more.

Wearing a regular blue top and jeans, her sling bag resting lightly on her shoulder, she stepped outside for a breath of air. The voices around her didn’t really register. She was too lost in the sky.

And then… her eyes landed on the moon. Thin and perfect. The Eid crescent.

She smiled. Just a little.

That’s when it happened.

From the steps of the mosque, a boy walked out — white kurta, calm face, eyes that looked like they knew silence well. He wasn’t loud, or proud, or meant to be noticed. But he was.

Their eyes met.

Just once. Just enough.

He looked away. Not because he was shy, or interested. He just didn’t know.

But she… she stood there for a second longer. Something about that moment felt strange and soft — like something had been placed in her chest without asking.

And she knew. She’d remember that face.

Ayla

“No one told me about him.

I wasn’t looking for anyone.

But in that one moment…

it felt like God gave me something I didn’t even know I was praying for.”
