Prologue
Deep within the faerie forest there is a creature more fantastical than any other, it has nine shiny and sharp teeth poking out of it’s large smile, a high blush on it’s cheeks, large and demonic looking eyes, 2 pointy ears, and a fuzzy coat. The creatures are called Labubus.
Many have gone on quests outside the walls of the kingdom in search of them throughout the centuries, yet none have ever returned sane enough to live much longer. They tell tall tales that only an insane person ever could, of wild parties and extravagant executions, of delicious foods and wars among their warlords, of fair princesses and valiant knights. Yet, all agree on one thing, the Labubus have created a world so dreamlike and beautiful one could never sate their thirst with anything else.
I once had the chance to attend a storytelling by a returned searcher. I sat among the many other creatures there, the goblins, and witches, and fae alike. Despite our many difference and disagreements we were all enraptured by the story she spun for us.
She had first stumbled upon them by falling down a cliff into the waters below, she had struggled and believed she would drown when she passed out. She awoke to many soft lights surrounding her and a chorus of heavenly singing voices from somewhere she could not see.
Soon she discovered that a boating labubu had found her and brought her onboard his speedboat. The next week she spent there was one of many wonders, of fortune tellers, of performances beyond your imagination, of the love stories that belong in fairytales, of great tricks and treats, of witches and warlocks, and of great, great despair. This because try as she might she could never rid this feeling that something, something just beyond what the eye could see, was truly and fundamentally wrong. As wrong as if gravity no longer existed.
As she was about to tell us about her departure she stopped suddenly and stared blankly into the distance. It was clear to us all that something had traumatized her so deeply that it only came to her in flashbacks. This was one of those times. One by one each creature slowly stood and left quietly. Each one leaving with a piece of wonder glimmering in their eyes until I was the last one still sitting. At last, I looked at her and silently wished her the best then left with an eerie feeling.
Now, although there are the many rumors and legends that one may or may not know of the labubus there is one singular story that every single creature knows. This story is the story of how the labubus were banished from our kingdom.
