Chapter 1

My pulse slammed in my ears as I stepped past the iron gates of Arcane Moon Academy. The cold night air clung to my fur, and the scent of moss and ancient magic wrapped around me like a shroud. Moonlight spilled over the ivy-covered stone walls, casting long shadows that seemed to watch — judging.

Every step felt heavier than the last. I wasn’t just the new girl here. I was different— a viral legend come to life, whispered about in hushed tones, an enigma with ember eyes and fur black as the midnight sky.

A low voice sliced through the silence.

“First day jitters?”

I whirled toward the sound, and there he was — tall, lean, with a wolfish grin that both infuriated and intrigued me. His dark eyes burned with mischief and something else I couldn’t quite place.

“You’re Labubu,” he said, his voice thick with teasing. “The viral creature come to haunt us for real?”

Heat flushed my cheeks beneath my fur, but I squared my shoulders. “I’m not a ghost,” I whispered, trying to keep my voice steady. “And I’m not here to haunt anyone.”

He laughed, that low, dangerous sound that sent a shiver down my spine. “Good. Because here, everyone’s got secrets. And I’m the one who likes to dig them out.”

Before I could say anything, a spark flared to life in my palm — raw magic bursting free like a wildfire. The crowd froze, eyes wide, watching the ember dance and fade.

Kaelen’s grin deepened. “Well, that’s one hell of an entrance.”

I wanted to disappear.

But there was something electric between us, a pull I didn’t understand but couldn’t ignore.

The headmistress’s sharp voice snapped me back.

“Enough! Labubu, follow me. Orientation begins.”

As I walked away, every nerve screamed. This place was alive with magic — wild, dangerous, and waiting for me to prove I belonged.

The corridors smelled of old stone, dust, and something faintly sweet — like dried herbs hidden in a forgotten apothecary. I followed the headmistress, my paws barely making a sound on the polished floors. Every pair of eyes seemed to flick toward me, some curious, others wary.

I wanted to shrink, vanish into the shadows. But I knew better. Ihadto stand tall. This was my chance.

After what felt like an eternity, the headmistress stopped outside a grand hall where the other new students gathered. I caught a glimpse of faces — witches with sharp smiles, warlocks with eyes like cold steel, and shifters whose postures screamed danger.

Then I saw him again — Kaelen, leaning casually against the wall, those wolf eyes locking with mine like a silent challenge.

The headmistress cleared her throat. “Welcome to Arcane Moon. Here, your powers will grow… but so will your enemies.”

My chest tightened. Powers. Enemies. Two words that felt like a warning and a promise all at once.

As the orientation began, I tried to focus, but my thoughts kept drifting to Kaelen. He was unlike anyone I’d ever met — wild, untamed, and undeniably magnetic.

Later, as the crowd dispersed, I felt a shadow brush against my shoulder.

“You’re going to need a guide,” Kaelen’s voice dropped to a low growl. “Lucky for you, I’m full of bad ideas.”

I glanced up, caught in his smoldering gaze. “Why would you help me?”

His grin was wicked. “Because you’re not like the others. And I like a little chaos.”

The heat in my cheeks deepened. Maybe this place wouldn’t be so bad after all.

Night had settled fully over the academy grounds when Kaelen finally led me out of the stone labyrinth of halls and into the cool embrace of the forest. Moonlight filtered through the branches, casting silver patterns on the soft moss beneath our feet.

“This is where the real lessons begin,” he said, voice low and teasing. “The woods don’t care about your grades.”

I shivered — not from cold, but from the electric charge between us as we stepped deeper under the ancient oaks. The scent of pine and earth wrapped around me like a promise, wild and untamed.

“You don’t have to be afraid,” Kaelen murmured, close enough that I could feel the warmth of his breath against my ear.

My breath hitched.

“I’m not,” I lied, though my heart betrayed me, pounding so loud I was sure the wolves could hear.

He chuckled softly, a rough, smoky sound that sent a thrill twisting through my belly.

“Good,” he said, eyes glinting. “Because tonight, you’re going to learn that magic isn’t just spells and books. It’s blood and fire and raw power.”

Before I could respond, his hand brushed mine — light, teasing, but enough to send a jolt up my arm. My fur flared in response, a wild pulse of energy I barely controlled.

Kaelen’s grin widened, lips brushing dangerously close to mine. “You’re not just some viral myth, Labubu. You’re the spark that could light this whole damn world on fire.”

My breath caught, and for a moment, the forest, the academy, the world outside didn’t exist.

Just us. And the wild, raw promise of what could be.

Kaelen’s eyes darkened, the teasing fading into something sharper — hungry, fierce. My pulse thundered in my ears as his hand slid from mine to brush a stray lock of fur behind my ear, fingers warm and trembling just slightly.

“You don’t have to hide who you are,” he whispered, his breath hot against my cheek. “Not here. Not with me.”

I swallowed hard, caught between fear and desire, between the safety of shadows and the wild pull of the unknown.

Then he closed the distance.

Our lips met—soft, questioning at first—then harder, hungrier. Electricity surged through me, igniting every nerve ending, setting my blood ablaze. The world narrowed until there was only the taste of him, the heat of his mouth, and the wild magic that crackled between us.

A sudden burst of light exploded from my palm, casting flickering shadows across his face. His eyes widened, but he didn’t pull away.

Instead, he smiled—a wicked, dangerous smile that promised more.

“Looks like you’re more powerful than you know,” he murmured.

My cheeks burned with a flush deeper than embarrassment—something fiercer, something I couldn’t yet name.

The kiss broke, but the tension lingered, thick and heavy between us.

“Come on,” Kaelen said, taking my hand again. “There’s a lot more you need to see tonight. And a lot more we need to survive.”

As we plunged deeper into the moonlit woods, I felt it — the first true spark of something I’d been missing all my life.

The forest around us shifted, the shadows thickening like ink spilling across the moonlit ground. Suddenly, the soft rustle of leaves became a growl, low and threatening, vibrating through the air.

Kaelen’s grip tightened around my wrist. “Stay close,” he warned, eyes scanning the darkness.

Before I could ask what was coming, a dozen glowing eyes appeared—wolves, larger and more fierce than any I’d seen, their fur bristling, teeth bared in silent snarls.

“We’re not alone,” Kaelen growled, shifting slightly—his body taut, muscles coiling beneath his shirt.

Panic prickled down my spine, but a strange calm settled over me too. The magic inside me stirred, wild and raw.

One wolf lunged forward, and instinct took over. I thrust my palm out, a flare of blazing ember magic bursting into the air.

The creatures snarled, retreating a step, eyes wide with surprise.

Kaelen’s wolf form emerged in a flash—silver fur rippling, claws unsheathed—as he moved to shield me.

“Labubu,” he called, voice fierce. “You’ve got power. Use it.”

I focused, heart pounding like a war drum. Another surge of fire leapt from my hands, weaving a protective barrier around us.

The pack hesitated, then retreated into the shadows—but not before their leader’s yellow eyes locked on mine with a warning.

As silence fell, I collapsed against Kaelen, breath ragged.

“You were incredible,” he murmured, fingers tracing my jaw.

I looked up into his stormy eyes, and for the first time, I felt like maybe… I belonged.
