Coffee sunlight and a promise

Hi, my name is Deni. I'm 33 years old, and this is my story...

Let's start from the beginning.

I woke up this morning late—it’s Sunday. I looked up at the clock; it was already 11:30 a.m. The window curtains were slightly open, and the sun was peeking through them. I'm sure it will be another hot and sunny day—it’s June, after all, and that’s expected.

I made my coffee exactly how I like it: not too strong, with a tiny bit of sugar, a little cream, and a lot of milk. I sat on the front yard swing and enjoyed the peaceful, calm scenery in front of me.

I live in a small town by the sea, and my house is right in front of the beach. It's a small, three-room house with an amazing view—I wouldn't change it for anything in this world.

As I took my first sip, I noticed my neighbor Julie coming up to my porch. She's the sweetest old lady. Julie asked me if she could join me for coffee. Of course, I said yes, and I made her a plain black coffee. She sat right next to me on the swing and told me that her health was getting more serious by the day. She needed to have her heart checked at a hospital in the nearby town.

I couldn’t help but feel sorry for her, knowing she didn’t have much family to support her if things got worse. So, I just hugged her and hoped with all my heart that she would get better. I told her that if she ever needed anything, I would be there for her—no matter what. She smiled politely at me and said that she knew I would say that.

I asked her if she needed someone to go with her—if she’d like me to come along to the hospital. She smiled and said that her nephew was going to be there with her. He was a well-known heart surgeon, and she knew she was in really good hands. He had offered to come specifically to check on her health at that hospital, and luckily, they allowed him to do so.

My heart felt at ease knowing she had someone who was truly close to her. So I just smiled and said, “I’m sure you’ll be okay, Julie. He’s a really good surgeon. If anyone can help you with your heart, it’s him. So don’t worry. Be strong—and I’ll see you when you come back.”

She hugged me really tight, like she knew that something was going to happen to her, but I didn’t pay much attention to it. We said goodbye, and she left.

I continued with my day. I sat at my computer, checked my emails, and then I noticed something unusual — an email from her nephew.

I hesitated for a moment before opening it. The subject line simply read: About Aunt Julie. My heart skipped a beat.

Inside, his words were polite but direct. He explained that Julie had spoken about me often, about how much she trusted me and how I was one of the few people she could rely on. He wanted to thank me for being there for her all these years. Then he added something that made me pause — “She hasn’t been feeling well for a while, and I’m concerned. Please keep an eye on her until I arrive in town.”

As I read his name at the bottom of the email, a wave of recognition washed over me. We knew each other — not just in passing, but from a long time ago. When we were children, we used to play together on the very beach that now stretched out in front of my house. I remembered the laughter, the sandcastles, the salty breeze, and the way the waves used to chase our feet. It had been decades since I’d last seen him, and now he was coming back.

For some reason, that memory, combined with Julie’s unusually tight hug earlier, left me feeling unsettled. I couldn’t shake the thought that she knew something I didn’t.

The rest of the afternoon passed in a blur. I tried to focus on my work, but my thoughts kept drifting back to Julie’s hug, her smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes, and the email from her nephew — my old childhood friend.

By the time evening came, the air had cooled and the sky was painted in soft shades of orange and purple. I when out again , this time sitting on the swing with a light blanket over my shoulders. The sea was calm, its waves gently kissing the shore, but there was something in the air — a heaviness I couldn’t explain.

I stared out at the horizon, remembering those carefree days when her nephew and I played in the sand, our only worry being whether the tide would wash away our castles. Now, decades later, he was returning… but under circumstances neither of us could have imagined back then.

The sound of the waves usually brought me peace, but tonight, they seemed to whisper something different — as if they were carrying a message I couldn’t quite hear. I pulled the blanket tighter and told myself it was just my imagination.

Still… a quiet unease lingered in my chest.

And as the last light faded from the sky, my phone buzzed again—with a message that would change everything.
