Chapter 1: Rebecca
Rebecca sat up in her room, the dim light piercing through the curtains of her room, she sat up and grumbled “I dont wanna get up yet”.
As Rebecca went downstairs to get ready to start her new school in LA. She got a call from her mother who left an hour before she had gotten up, as she clicked the answer button she began to speak “Hell-”.
“REBECCA YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO BE UP AND HOUR AGO!” her mother practically screamed into the phone.
“Relax mom, I'm up now” she replied, annoyed.
“No you need to hurry up and get going,” her mom replied calmer this time.
“Alright mom im leaving right now, bye” Rebecca said.
Then ‘click’ she hung up and Rebecca hurriedly grabbed her backpack and tumbled out the door with the backpack string getting caught on the door handle of the apartment door.
-
When Rebecca finally got to the school she started to walk towards the massive private school her mom had signed her up for despite Rebecca's protests to a private school.
As Rebecca started to walk towards the massive front doors she tripped on something and fell face first crashing into the bricks, from behind her she heard “oh shit, are you okay?”.
Rebeccas face flushed a bright red “Uhm- yea im okay I think”.
The stranger helped her up and introduced themselves “Hi, my name is Derek Smith”.
“Rebecca Williams” she said shyly, the pair started to walk together Derek leading the way showing Rebecca where her classes were.
“Are you new here? I’ve never seen you around” Derek questioned.
“Yea I am, I just moved from Seattle Washington” Rebecca replied.
“Oh wow, you’ll have to tell me all about it sometime. I've never left LA” Derek said to Rebecca, hopeful for a new friend.
Rebecca laughed awkwardly “Maybe sometime…”
“Hey we have the same first period, what a coincidence” Derek said while bumping his shoulder against Rebecca’s.
Rebecca just laughed at his comment and turned to face him.
“Thank you Derek for showing me around” Rebecca said
Derek gave a soft laugh “no problem, wanna have lunch together?” he asked in a sweet tone as they walked into
“Yea for sure” Rebecca said as they found a table that was empty. They sat down together just waiting for the bell to ring.
-
About twenty minutes into class the doors swung open and a tall dark haired girl waltzed in unapologetic of being late.
The teacher turned on her heels to face the now wide open door “Your late Ms. Alexander”.
The tall figure ignored the teacher and sat at the table behind Rebecca and Derek, she put in some headphones entirely ignoring the lecture going on.
Rebecca glanced back at the girl who was staring daggers at the back of her head, she quickly turned around and her cheeks flushed she turned to Derek who took no notice of her encounter.
She began writing a note to Derek that read:
Who is that girl behind us she's terrifying
Derek took it and started to laugh in a hushed tone he then wrote back:
That's Angela Alexander her family basically owns this school
He handed it back to the flustered girl and as she read she choked on the water she took a sip of moments earlier:
Are you serious she looks like she would be more of a stoner girl then a rich kid
Derek took the note back and laughed a little too loud, catching the teacher's attention “Derek, disrupting the class? What's so funny?”
Derek immediately went red “Sorry miss I just thought about something funny, please continue”
The teacher turned then spoke out “Don’t disrupt my class again”
Derek looked down “Yes ma’am”
Derek took a look at the note and began writing:
She might be a stoner she really could care less about school this is her 7th school this school year
Rebecca took the note then glanced back again at the mysterious girl, ‘ HAD THE GIRL BEEN STARING AT ME THIS WHOLE TIME?’ Rebecca offered a soft shy smile then quickly turned around again.
-
Lunch rolled around and Rebecca was keeping her eyes peeled for Derek when she found him already sitting at a table two trays set down in front of him Rebecca took that as an invite and sat across from Derek “Hey Derek” she greeted him with a bright smile plastered on her face.
“Hey Rebecca, I hope you don't mind, I already bought you lunch.” Derek returned the smile with one of his own.
“Oh not at all thank you…. Also whats up with that table right up front it looks like a wedding where the bride and groom sit in front of everyone” Rebacca asked curiously.
“Oh that uhm- thats where our student council sits they are basically royalty around here” Derek whispered scared if someone heard him they rip him apart.
“Oh that's interesting I guess,” Rebecca replied, right after she said that the same Tall girl from before walked in and took her seat at the very end of the table.
Rebecca shifted in her seat, unable to take her eyes off the powerful figure, who was currently drawing her attention like a vacuum sucking up crumbs.
As she was staring she noticed the girl had shifted her gaze and met Rebecca's eyes. Rebecca looked away as fast as possible, face visibly red from getting caught staring at her.
Derek had caught on this time “Hey, you okay?”.
Rebecca's eyes quickly snapped to Derek's face “Oh yea- im just fine no problems here” She said a bit too quickly.
Derek just chuckled but didn't push any further, instead he picked up his fork and began prodding at the almost gourmet meal in front of him.
Rebecca's eyes kept shifting between her food and the girl who was radiating a powerful aura, she couldn't keep her eyes off the gorgeo- no the untouchable woman, she corrected her mind like she was having a conversation.
-
By the end of lunch Rebecca was all smiles from jokes shared between her and Derek, they walked together towards Rebecca's next class, unfortunately they didn't share this class.
However, the person who almost gave her a heart attack was Angela, who for whatever reason decided to plop herself right next to Rebecca.
Rebecca had been holding her breath when out of the blue Angela turned to her and snapped “Why have you been staring at me all day new girl?”
Rebecca's face flushed almost instantly and she now felt nauseous, before nervously replying “-Uhm sorry I- uh didnt mean to stare.” the words tumbled out of her mouth like they were running from a fire.
The girl beside her gave one last look and then murmured something under her breath.
The class passed so slowly Rebecca was too scared to even glance at Angela afraid of any more confrontation, when the bell was going to ring the teacher suddenly announced “Alright guys I know just how much everyone likes group work so I'm going to pair you guys up and you will have to write a poem together”.
The teacher started announcing names like ‘James and Grace’ ‘Lora and Olivia’ until finally he got to Rebecca “Rebecca and Angela” Rebecca froze and suddenly the bell rang.
Angela wrote a note to Rebecca and then packed up and left, she was unfolding the note cautiously like if she opened it too fast it might explode the note read:
My number is 888 756 4089, text me when your free so we can start our project
Rebecca stiffened and for a moment felt like she might have been turned to stone, when she got up to leave she found Derek already outside waiting for her to walk to their last classes together.
-
By the end of the day Rebecca was wiped out and her mind kept wandering but it kept coming back to one thought the phone number she took out her phone and began copying down the number on her cellphone once she finally got it she started typing out a text that read:
2:30pm Hey this is Rebecca Williams, I believe we are paired up for the poem for Daniel's class or at least I hope this is the right number. You handed me a note with a number on it that said it was yours so I hope I didn't mess up the number and I'm texting some random person.
Rebecca laid back in her bed and before sending it thought to herself if that's too much or if she's just overthinking it, then she clicked send.
A sudden chime interrupted her thoughts and she looked down to see what it was and then she saw it a message from this mystery number she hoped was Angela's and that she didn't mess up she then opened her messages and read it:
2:35pm: Hi, I'm Angela Alexander, though I'm sure you already know that you have been asking Derek who I was. But yes this is the right number so when you are free to start the project we have a week so plenty of time but might as well get it done and over with.
Rebecca's breath hitched when she read the part about Derek ‘How did she know I was writing notes about her did she see them oh god did she read the stoner part’ Rebecca responded to the text:
2:36pm: I'm really free anytime so whenever you have time in your schedule we can go to the library at the school or something.
The next chime came much faster this time:
2:37pm: Okay, perfect . We will do it at my house tomorrow after school. I will pick you up from your house so you can get out of your uniform.
Rebecca swallowed the lump in her throat and reluctantly responded despite her fear:
02:39pm: Alright sounds good, see you then :)
Rebecca stayed up a few more hours waiting for a response but she got nothing so she checked her phone and saw that Angela just opened it.
So Rebecca decided she wanted to sleep and she began to close her eyes and let the exhaustion from the day take her.
