Falling For Barlowe

Summary

Chloe was ready for her final school year — looking forward to it, actually. She never expected her life to implode. But after her dad’s very public arrest, the whispers at school grew fangs, and she mastered the art of invisibility: eyes down, walls up, and emotions tucked neatly away. Quiet, anxious, and just trying to survive, she keeps her head down and her secrets closer. All she wants is to get through the last stretch of school, protect her little sister, and play piano where no one can hear her. Then comes Robert Barlowe — rugby star, confidence personified, and definitely someone she’s crushed on from a distance like every other girl at Cedarbrook High. But crushes are safe when they’re one-sided. Chloe never expected him to notice her… let alone want to know her. But Robert keeps showing up. Teasing. Flirting. Offering coffee. And maybe something more. At first, Chloe thinks he’s just being nice. Or worse — messing with her. But the more she pushes him away, the more real he seems. With her new friends by her side and Robert pulling her slowly into his orbit, Chloe starts to find her voice — and her place. But as she begins to believe she might be allowed a life beyond survival, she also has to face the fear that comes with falling: what if love makes her lose herself again? Or worse… what if it’s real? When the pressure of independence mounts, Chloe will have to decide if love is something she can afford… or if standing on her own means letting go of the one person who never asked her to hide. Funny, vulnerable, and utterly swoon-filled, Falling for Barlowe is a story about first love, finding quiet strength, falling hard, and choosing your heart — yourself — even when it scares you most.

Author's Note and Character inspirations

As a proudly South African author, this story is written in UK (SA) English and follows our school year, which runs from January to December. To help place the events in context, here’s how our seasons fall:

Summer: December to February

Autumn: March to May

Winter: June to August

Spring: September to November

Falling for Barlowe is the second book in The Cedarbrook Chronicles, following on from Season of Us. While you can absolutely enjoy this as a stand-alone, reading the first book will give you a deeper understanding of the wider cast and how their lives intertwine.

This story holds a special place in my heart — it weaves together moments of friendship, heartache, laughter, and the slow, sometimes surprising ways people find each other. I hope you connect with Chloe and Robert as much as I have, and maybe even catch glimpses of yourself in their journey.

If you enjoy the book, I’d love for you to share your thoughts in the comments — whether it’s your favourite scene, the character who stole your heart, or the moment that made you laugh out loud. Every message, emoji, review, and recommendation truly means more than I can say.

Thank you for stepping into Cedarbrook with me!
