Chapter 1

CHAPTER 1-SCORCHED BEGINNINGS

Sophia Calderon adjusted the collar of her navy silk blouse, fingers trembling only slightly.

The conference room buzzed around her-voices low, the occasional clink of coffee cups, the shuffle of expensive suits. She could feel the eyes on her. After all, this was the biggest presentation of her career.

She glanced at the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Manhattan. Early morning sun glinted off steel and glass, spilling golden light across the polished table. The city felt alive, vibrating with energy-and with danger.

Danger like Julian Locke.

Sophia forced her gaze away from the man sitting at the head of the table. But even without looking, she could feel him watching her. The weight of it prickled over her skin.

Julian Locke was the CEO of Locke Enterprise. Tall, dark-haired, sharply tailored in a charcoal suit, he exuded calm authority. He didn't raise his voice; he didn't need to. One cold look could freeze an entire room.

And right now, his eyes were all over her.

Sophia cleared her throat and flipped to the next slide.

"Based on our projections, the Phoenix Initiative could increase Locke Enterprise market share in emerging tech sectors by fourteen percent over three years."

She tried to sound cool, professional. She'd practiced this pitch for weeks. But her voice wavered just slightly under Julian's stare.

"Assuming," a deep voice cut in, "that your cost estimates hold up under real-world conditions."

Julian spoke without looking at the screen. His eyes were on Sophia alone, dark and unreadable.

Sophia's pulse jumped. "They will. We've modeled conservative forecasts and accounted for supply chain volatility-"

"Show me." His tone was soft. Dangerous.

Sophia swallowed. She clicked to another chart, fingers brushing the sleek metal of the remote. The screen filled with neat graphs and data points.

Julian sat back in his chair, steepling his fingers. The room fell silent, as though the entire executive team were holding its breath.

At last, a tiny smile curved the edge of Julian's mouth.

"Impressive, Ms. Calderon."

The compliment sent a shiver through her. And the way he said her name-Lane, crisp and precise-felt like both a challenge and a caress.

Sophia felt the tension in the room dissolve. A few of the older executives exhaled quietly. Caroline, her best friend and colleague, shot her a discreet thumbs-up from across the table.

But Julian wasn't finished. He leaned forward.

"Stay after the meeting. I'd like a word."

Sophia blinked. "Of course, Mr. Locke."

The rest of the room faded into a blur. The final few slides rolled by in a haze as the meeting wrapped. People filed out, murmuring congratulations. Caroline gave Sophia a questioning look but said nothing as she left.

When the glass door closed, silence fell like velvet.

Julian rose slowly, slipping one hand into his pocket. The other trailed along the back of a chair as he moved closer.

"Your work was excellent," he murmured. "But there's one thing you didn't account for."

Sophia swallowed hard. "And what's that?"

He stopped just inches away. Close enough for her to smell the faint scent of expensive cologne-woodsy, clean, masculine. His gaze dropped briefly to her lips before finding her eyes again.

"Distraction."

Sophia's breath caught.

Julian's voice dropped lower. "I find you...distracting, Ms. Calderon."

Sophia felt heat rise from her chest to her cheeks. Her mind screamed at her to keep this professional, to push him away. But his presence was magnetic, impossible to ignore.

"Mr. Locke-"

He held up a hand. "Julian."

Sophia swallowed. "Julian. We can't...this isn't appropriate."

A corner of his mouth lifted. "That's the problem, Sophia. I'm finding it increasingly difficult to care about what's appropriate."

For a heartbeat, silence pulsed between them like a living thing. Then Julian stepped back, h

face shuttering closed.

"Meet me in my office at six." His tone was businesslike again. "We have more to discuss regarding the Phoenix Initiative."

Sophia stared at him, heart pounding.

"Yes, sir."

Julian gave her one last look-intense, hungry-and walked out, leaving Sophia standing in the empty conference room, feeling as though her entire life had just caught fire.
