Chapter 1 A NEW BEGINNING

Chapter One – A New Beginning

The train ride had been long, but Sophie didn’t mind. It had been a journey worth taking — one filled with laughter, a few tears, and precious moments with her younger sister. Now, as the train finally rolled into the station, she stepped onto the platform with a mix of fatigue and excitement curling in her chest.

She scanned the crowd, her eyes searching for the familiar face she had been longing to see. Somewhere among the sea of strangers, Zoe would be waiting. Her older sister had promised to pick her up, and Zoe never broke her promises.

Sophie tapped her foot impatiently, the chilly afternoon air brushing against her skin. Then she heard it — a clear, familiar voice calling her name.

“Sophie!”

She spun around, and there she was — Zoe, smiling wide, her eyes bright with joy. Sophie’s own face lit up instantly.

“Finally! I almost lost my patience,” Sophie teased, though her tone was warm.

“I’m sorry,” Zoe laughed. “Come on, let’s get going.”

They slipped into a waiting taxi, the engine rumbling to life. The ride home was a stream of questions and answers, each word weaving them back into the closeness they had missed. Sophie smiled as she spoke, realizing just how much she had missed her sister’s presence.

When they arrived, Zoe led the way through a spacious compound. Sophie’s eyes darted around, expecting that they’d stop soon — but Zoe kept walking.

“Not here,” Zoe said with a mischievous smile. They turned a corner, and Zoe stopped in front of a smaller building. “Here.” She pushed the door open.

It wasn’t quite what Sophie had imagined — smaller, simpler — but it had a roof, walls, and warmth. It would do.

After a quick shower, Sophie slipped into a light, airy dress that let her skin breathe. She stood in front of the small mirror, telling herself this was it — a fresh start. She was nineteen, with scars from the past but dreams that stretched far ahead. She had made a promise to herself: by the time she turned twenty-two, she would have built the life she deserved. And she intended to keep that promise.

That evening, she and Zoe strolled down the street to withdraw some cash. The sun had dipped low, casting golden shadows across the pavement. And then Sophie saw him.

He was dressed head to toe in black — hoodie, trousers, and an air of quiet mystery. His head was slightly bowed, but when their eyes met, something in her chest shifted. Heat rushed to her cheeks, and she looked away quickly.

On their walk back, she caught sight of him again. This time, he was across the road, moving at a quicker pace, but she was certain it was the same man.

She couldn’t shake the image from her mind. The curve of his jaw beneath the shadow of the hood, the way he seemed to belong to the night. There was something about him that pulled at her curiosity.

Maybe, Sophie thought with a small smile, staying with Zoe wouldn’t be so bad after all. Perhaps this really was the beginning of something new.
