Chapter 1 – Midnight lanterns

The city was quiet that night. Not silent... cities never are..... but quiet enough for the soft hum of life to feel like a lullaby. The air was cool, the streets still damp from an evening rain that had left tiny crystal beads clinging to the leaves. A faint scent of wet earth and blooming jasmine drifted through the air, carried by a breeze that seemed to whisper secrets.

She walked slowly down the cobblestone lane, her sandals tapping gently, her dress brushing against her legs. Every step was deliberate, not because she was in a hurry, but because she didn’t want to rush. Tonight wasn’t about rushing. Tonight was about… feeling.

The string of paper lanterns overhead glowed with a soft golden light, swaying slightly with the breeze. The light touched her hair, gave her skin a warm glow, and made her eyes look like molten honey. She was waiting ... though she would never admit how her heart had been beating all day in anticipation.

And then, he appeared.

Not from some grand entrance, not with a cinematic soundtrack, but simply… walking toward her. A familiar silhouette, hands tucked into his jacket pockets, head tilted slightly as though he had been thinking of a thousand things....all of them about her.

When their eyes met, time softened.

He smiled first. That lopsided smile that always felt like it was made for her and only her.

“You came,” he said quietly, almost as if speaking louder might scare the moment away.

“I told you I would.” Her voice was gentle, but there was a spark ...that tiny, unspoken electricity they’d never been able to ignore.

They fell into step together without saying anything more, walking side by side down the lantern-lit path. Every so often, their hands brushed. Neither moved away. Eventually, he let his fingers slip between hers, and she didn’t hesitate.

They ended up at the small riverside park, where the water caught the reflection of the lanterns and scattered them like stars across the surface. The only sound was the soft ripple of the river and the occasional rustle of leaves overhead.

“Do you ever think,” he said after a long pause, “that some moments are too perfect to belong to real life? Like they were stolen from a dream?”

She turned her head, studying him. “Maybe. Or maybe some dreams are just promises that were always meant to come true.”

He didn’t answer right away. Instead, he stepped closer, his hands still holding hers, his eyes tracing her face as if memorizing every detail. “I think,” he murmured, “I’ve been waiting for this night longer than I realized.”

The rest happened slowly. The kind of slow that makes every heartbeat count. His forehead rested against hers. She could feel his breath, warm against the cool night air. Her pulse was quick, but not nervous.... it was the kind of quick that comes when your heart is telling you, This is it.

When he finally kissed her, the lanterns above seemed to glow a little brighter. The river kept flowing, the night kept breathing, but for them, the world had shrunk to that single point where his lips met hers, soft and sure.

They stayed there for what felt like hours, talking, laughing, sitting with their shoes off, toes dipping into the cool water. By the time they finally started walking back, the lanterns were beginning to dim, and the first pale hints of dawn touched the sky.

Neither wanted to say goodbye. They both knew they wouldn’t have to because after tonight, nothing would ever be quite the same again.
