CHAPTER 1 - THE AWAKENING
The rain-soaked street of Oakdale glistened under the flashing glow of streetlights, each splash mirroring a shattered reflection of neon signs; pink, blue and green, that pulsed with the town's energy. Nora stood at the entrance of the alley with her leather boots brushing against the rough pavement as she exhaled a misty breath into the bracing autumn air. In her gloved hands held a leather-bound book, it's cover worn but unblemished, as if time had aged it to perfection. She had discovered the book in the husk of the old bookshop on Carillon street, tucked behind a shelf that seemed frozen in time. The shop had been up since the fire incident of "93, yet the book remained immaculate but heavy with unnatural warmth. The book throbbed faintly against her palms like a heartbeat, she could hear tiny whispers from the book but couldn't decipher yet what it was.
Nora Kane was a woman of facts and figures of dusty archives and forgotten histories. As a freelance archivist, she spent her days uncovering hidden stories of the past, piercing together fragments of lives left behind. Her work was her passion and sanctuary, but on this day, she felt the pull of something more. These faint throbbing sounds and whispers from the book increased her curiosity and beckoned her into the unknown. Though she didn't believe in magic or curses, the ledger's pull was just undeniable. Nora hadn't meant to get involved, but was a skeptic by trade, and the rumors spoke of a ledger, passed down through generations, that could rewrite reality itself. A single word written in it's pages could unravel a moment, reshape life or erase someone completely. She had spent restless months tracking it down, putting together Informations from moldy journals and cryptic posts on obscure X-threads. Every lead pointing to this alley, this night, this moment......
The clocktower in the distance struck midnight, it's chime echoed through the almost empty streets. Nora startled with fear, her grip tightening on the ledger. She had not opened it yet, afraid of what she might find, or what might find her. The air grew heavier, charged with something she couldn't name. The she saw it; a dark figure detaching from the brick wall across the street, it's form rippling like a living thing. It moved without sound, gliding towards her with purpose, and then puff , it disappears like it was never there . Nora's heart raced , but she didn't run. Running felt like admitting she was prey and she had never been good at playing helpless. "I'm starting to imagine things", she says as she let out a soft tense laughter. As she was about leaving the alley, she noticed the figure again at the corner of her eye. She turned towards the shape, trembling, "Who's there?" , she called , her voice steadier than she felt. The dark shape paused , it's form flickering like a flame caught in a draft. For a moment, she thought she saw eyes within it, glittering, endless and old. The ledger's faint sound became louder, it's warmth turned hotter in her hands and a single word surfaced in her mind, unbidden;write. Nora stumbled back, her shoulder grazing the clammy alley wall. The mysterious presence didn't inch forward, but didn't recede either. It waited, patient as death, and then vanished. She looked down at the ledger in her hands, it's covers twinkled lightly under the streetlight. Whatever this book was, it wasn't just a relic, it was alive and this Dark figure was only just the beginning.
"Careful with that book archivist" , a voice rumbled from the darkness behind her. Nora spun , heart pounding , to find a young man leaning against the wall of the alley opposite her, half hidden in the shade. He was tall , wiry with a mop of silver streaked hair that didn't match his youthful face . His eyes, sharp and gray as storm clouds, locked onto the ledger with emotional depth that made her skin sting. He wore a frayed coat, it's pockets bulging with what looked like rolled up scrolls and broken pens, and a crooked smile that didn't reach his eyes.
"Who are you?" Nora demanded , shifting her stance to keep the stranger in sight . The ledger's twinkle became brighter, as if it recognized him . "Name's Elias", he said, pushing off the wall with a lazy grace. "And you're Nora Kane, the woman who digs up what's better left buried". He titled his head, studying her like a puzzle he had not decided to solve yet. "The book you're holding, it's not yours. Never was. But it's awake now, and so are they". Nora's mouth went dry ,"Who are they?", she questioned curiously. "I believe you've see them, the shadows", Elias said. "You know what this is?" she said while holding the book tighter, her skepticism warring with the evidence of her senses, "what are you after?". Elias smile widened, but there was no warmth in it. "same as you, maybe answers, or maybe I'm here to keep you from writing something you'll regret".
He took a step closer ,"The ledger doesn't just rewrite reality, Nora, it rewrites you, and trust me , You don't want to meet the version of yourself it's got planned". The air crackled. Nora's heart kept racing . Whoever this man was, he knew too much, about her , the ledger and about the thing that watched her from across the street. And yet , something in his voice , a tremor beneath the bravado, told her he was just as trapped in this moment as she was. He took another step , close enough now that she could see the faint scar tracing his jaw , a jagged line that caught the neon glow. His gaze moved from the ledger to her face , lingering a moment too long. Nora felt a jolt ,not fear , not quite , but something Warmer, sharper , that made her breath catch. "You're not what I expected", he said, softer now, almost to himself. "Most people would've run by now , or opened that book and damned themselves". Nora's cheek flushed, but she held his stare, refusing to let the moment unsettle her. "And you're not what I expected either", she shot back. "What kind of a man skulks in alleys, preaching about cursed books?" There was a spark in his eyes at that, a glimmer or amusement, and for a second , the tension between them felt less like danger. "skulking is my specialty" , Elias said, his voice low, teasing, but his hand hovered near his coat pocket, as if reaching to draw something, maybe a weapon, maybe another secret. "But you, Nora Kane, you're trouble. I knew it the moment I saw your name on those X posts". He leaned I. slightly, close enough that she caught the faint scent of ink and old paper on him , like he had been steeped in the same archives she lived for. "You're not just curious , you're haunted, and the ledger knows it too".
Fear seemed to sip in again, a moment that felt less like danger turned back to being tensed. Nora felt a rise in her heartbeat, torn between the urge to fling the book away and the inexplicable pull to open it. Elias's warning echoed In her mind, but so did the way his voice softened when he said her name. Whoever he was, an ally , enemy or something stranger, he was tied to this book , and to her , in ways she couldn't untangle."Stay back" , she said, stepping away from Elias, her voice firm, despite the tremor in her hands. " I don't trust you or whatever I've seen here today". Elias raised his hands, palms open , but his smile didn't fade, "smart. Trust is a bad bet in Oakdale, buy you'll need me, Nora. That ledger has already gotten it's hook on you, and I'm the only one who knows how to keep it from tearing you apart". Without a word , Nora spun on her heels , clutching the ledger tightly, and sprinted down the alley, away from Elias. The neon lights blurred as she ran, her breath coming in ragged grasps. She didn't dare look back , fearing what might see. Finally, she burst into the main street, weaving through the sparse late night crowd. She hailed a taxi , and dove in , not relaxing until they had put several blocks between them and the alley.
"We're here ma'am", the driver said to Nora who seemed lost in thought. She stepped out of the taxi and onto the wet pavement, the cool night air , a welcome respite from the confined space . She paid the driver and watched as the taxi pulled away, it's taillights fading into the darkness. The street was quiet, the only sound was the distant hum of the town and the soft patter of rain on the pavement. She turned to face her building, a nondescript structure that blended into the urban landscape. Nora's eyes scanned the facade, her gaze lingering on the let windows of her apartment on the third floor. She felt a sense of relief wash over her as she pushed through the lobby doors, and into the warm , dimly lit space . The elevator ride was brief. She stepped out into the deserted hallway, her heels clicking on the carpet. She fumbled her keys, her hands still shaking slightly from the encounter earlier. The lock clicked open and she pushed the door open, slipping inside into the familiar comfort of her apartment. The soft glow of the table lamp in the living room cast a warm welcome and she felt some of the tension ebb away as she closed the door behind her. She set the ledger on her coffee table , her eyes fixed on it's worn leather cover. The hum had stopped, but she could still feel it's presence, like a weight in the room.
She made way to bedroom , pulled her clothes and set in for a hot bathe . After which she took out a bottle of wine and a glass, poured in some and took a sip off her cup . She approached the ledger cautiously, her fingers tracing the cover's intricate designs . She hesitated a while , then opened the book . The pages were blank , but she could sense the power emanating from them. As she flipped through the pages, shocked as to why they were empty , her mind replayed the events in the alley. Elias's words echoed in her mind; "the ledger doesn't just rewrite reality Nora , it rewrites you". She thought about the dark figure she had seen , it's eyes glinting with an otherworldly intensity . Her gaze lingered on the pages , searching for answers .What secrets lay hidden with the ledgers blank pages and what did Elias mean by "the version of yourself it got planned?". Her thoughts swirled with questions, but she was definitely going to uncover the truth , no matter what it was going to cost. As she sat there , the city outside her window throbbed with life , and the ledger seemed to wait patiently, it's secret ready to be unlocked.
