Chapter 1 - The Man Who Walked in Shadows

The small coastal town of Briar’s Edge was the sort of place where everyone knew everyone — or at least thought they did. Beneath the salt-stung breeze and the chatter of gulls, secrets lingered like shadows in the alleys.

Damien Ross preferred it that way.

The townsfolk saw only what he allowed them to see — a quiet man in worn jeans and a flannel shirt, working odd jobs at the docks and occasionally helping the bakery with heavy deliveries. Nobody guessed that beneath the humble clothes lay the sharp mind of a billionaire whose name opened doors in the world’s most exclusive circles.

He rented a modest loft above the old bookshop, paid in cash, and never spoke much about his past. Not that anyone asked; small towns loved gossip, but they respected distance.

On a chilly October morning, Damien carried a crate of flour into Baker’s Hearth. The warm smell of cinnamon and freshly baked bread wrapped around him like a gentle hand. And there she was — behind the counter, her hair tied in a loose braid, her hands dusted with flour.

“Elena,” the owner called from the kitchen, “serve Mr. Ross before the bread burns!”

She looked up, startled, her soft grey eyes catching his like a hook. They were beautiful eyes — but haunted, rimmed with a weariness far too old for someone her age.

“Uh… coffee?” she asked, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear.

Damien smiled faintly. “Please. Black.”

She poured it with steady hands, but her gaze kept flickering to the window, as if expecting someone — or something — to appear.

“You’re new in town, right?” he asked casually.

“Been here… five years,” she said, her voice low. “Feels longer.”

There was no laughter in the words. Damien filed that away — another piece of the quiet puzzle that was Elena Vance.

As he left, coffee warming his palm, he saw her reflection in the glass. She was watching him — not with suspicion, but with a kind of wary curiosity.

And in that moment, Damien knew one thing with certainty: this woman had secrets. The kind you didn’t share with strangers. The kind that could break a person in half.

He didn’t yet know that those secrets would drag them both into a past steeped in betrayal, horror, and blood.
